Momos have quietly become one of the better halal orders in Calgary, but they're easy to miss because they rarely headline a menu — they show up as a starter at a biryani spot, a side at a meat counter, or under a different name entirely (mantu, dumplings) at an Afghan or Hui kitchen. If you actually want to find them, here's where to look.

The real thing: steamed momos

The Biryani Room on Memorial Drive is best known for its biryani, but the momos are a genuine second specialty rather than an afterthought — worth ordering as a starter even if biryani is why you came. Halal meat is used throughout as the kitchen's stated practice, without a separately listed certifying body.

Out in Chestermere, Masala Meats and Takeout runs a halal meat counter alongside an Indian takeout kitchen, and the momos come out of the same kitchen that supplies the meat counter directly — along with fish pakora and other tandoori sides. Worth ordering as a side if you're mainly there to stock the freezer.

If you're open to the dumpling family more broadly

Momos aren't the only halal dumpling in the city, and if you like the format, these are worth knowing about even though the kitchens aren't Nepali or Tibetan. Bahar Kabab downtown does mantu, the Afghan dumpling that's a close cousin of the momo — a good order if you've only had kebabs there before. Mazza, also downtown, serves beef dumplings alongside its qabuli pulao and chapli kebab in a nicer sit-down dining room than most Afghan spots.

For something further from momo but still in the dumpling family, Ca-Town Halal House does hand-made lamb dumplings in a northern Chinese Muslim (Hui) style — genuinely rare in Calgary, and worth a visit if you want to see how halal dumpling traditions outside South Asia compare. It's a smaller, newer spot, so call ahead if you're set on a specific dish.

A note on Nepali and Tibetan restaurants generally

Calgary has a small Nepali and Tibetan restaurant scene where momos are the whole point of the menu, not a side dish — but halal status varies kitchen to kitchen and isn't something we've been able to confirm for most of them yet. If you know of a Nepali or Tibetan kitchen in Calgary that's genuinely halal, that's exactly the kind of tip we want, since it would fill a real gap on this list.
