"Halal banking in Calgary" is really three questions wearing one name: where do I keep my money day to day, how do I buy a home without an interest contract, and how do I grow what I save. The first has no clean answer from any big bank yet; the second has a genuinely local one as of 2025; the third has more options than most people realise. This guide sorts them, with a link to every provider and branch finder mentioned. It builds on our explainers What Is Halal Financing? and Halal Mortgages in Calgary. This is general information, not financial advice — a licensed advisor and a qualified scholar are the people to sit with before signing anything.
The short version
No big Canadian bank runs an Islamic banking window, in Calgary or anywhere else. So most Muslims in the city assemble halal banking from parts: an ordinary chequing account for bills and pay, a specialist provider for a home, and a Shariah-screened fund for savings meant to grow. What changed recently is the home part — Alberta now has a credit-union halal mortgage, which is the first time a regulated local lender has offered one here.
Everyday banking: the chequing account
A chequing account that pays no interest raises no riba question; the question is savings accounts, which almost always do. Many people keep an ordinary account and either decline the interest or pass it to charity. Two things are worth knowing before you pick one:
- "No fee" is not "no interest". Simplii's No Fee Chequing and Tangerine's chequing account both charge no monthly fee — and both pay tiered interest on the balance.
- ATB Financial, the Alberta-owned lender, lists several $0 chequing accounts; whether a given one earns interest is worth confirming at the branch before you rely on it.
The one account we could confirm is built to be interest-free is Manzil Money, a no-interest prepaid Mastercard account from the Toronto-based halal finance company. Read the fine print the way you would with any fintech: Manzil Money is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business, not a bank, so do not assume your balance has the deposit insurance a chartered bank account carries — ask.
Most of halal banking in Calgary happens online - the specialist providers have no branches here
Buying a home: the part Alberta just changed
This is where the news is. Servus Halal, a subsidiary of Servus Credit Union, launched in fall 2025 with a 25-year cost-plus-profit (murabaha) home financing product open to anyone buying in Alberta who meets the down-payment and income requirements. It is certified annually by the Canadian Islamic Finance Board, a Shariah board led by Edmonton's Al Rashid Foundation and formed together with communities including Calgary's. Servus's own announcement explains how it came together. Connect First, the Calgary credit union many people remember, merged into Servus, so its old branches are Servus branches now — find one with the Servus branch finder.
Two national providers also lend in Alberta:
- Manzil — murabaha and musharaka (co-ownership) home financing, plus Shariah-screened investing and Islamic wills. It lends in Alberta; its published certificates are for its Ontario products, so ask for the ones covering yours.
- EQRAZ — a commodity-murabaha mortgage certified by its own Shariah board, with a page written for Calgary buyers. It says it lends across Alberta; it no longer offers mortgages in Ontario, where it says it is not licensed. Ask to see its Alberta licensing before you apply.
One name you will see in older coverage deserves a caution. The Canadian Halal Financial Corporation in Edmonton offers murabaha and diminishing musharaka financing, but Al Rashid Mosque ended its certification relationship with the company in January 2024, as CBC reported. The company said mosque review was no longer needed. If you are considering it, ask who certifies it now. For how the three contract types compare and what to ask any lender, our halal mortgage guide goes deeper.
Why the big banks still are not in it
In November 2024 Alberta tabled legislation letting credit unions and ATB Financial offer alternative-financing products like halal mortgages (Global News and Canadian Mortgage Professional covered it). It allows; it does not require. Servus used it; ATB has said it is committed to understanding demand but has no halal product yet. The big six banks are federally regulated, and federally the story has stalled: Budget 2024 said Ottawa was exploring ways to expand access to alternative financing like halal mortgages and promised an update, but neither the 2024 Fall Economic Statement nor Budget 2025 followed through with a measure. As Global News put it when the budget landed, none of the big six offers a halal mortgage — and that is still the case.
Interest-free loans
The oldest form of halal credit is the qard hasan, the benevolent loan repaid with nothing added. We could not confirm a Calgary mosque running a standing qard hasan program — if yours does, tell us and we will add it. The closest established one is IANA Financial, a volunteer-run Edmonton non-profit that has made interest-free loans to people across Canada since 2009.
Saving and investing
Money meant to grow is where the choice is widest. The Wealthsimple Shariah World Equity Index ETF (WSHR) trades on a Canadian exchange and can be held in a TFSA or RRSP at most brokerages. Manzil offers Shariah-screened portfolios, and our financing explainer covers Wahed and others. If you would rather sit across a desk from someone, Assad Wealth Management on Country Hills Landing NW advertises halal investing and halal group retirement plans, and has hosted information sessions on the Servus Halal mortgage — listed as a local option, not a recommendation.
Finding a branch in Calgary
For the ordinary account that sits beside all of this, each institution's own finder is the reliable map — branches open, close and move faster than any article:
- Servus Credit Union — the only Calgary lender with a halal product, through Servus Halal
- ATB Financial — Alberta-owned; no halal product yet
- RBC Royal Bank
- TD Canada Trust
- Scotiabank
- BMO Calgary branches
- CIBC Calgary branches
- National Bank
- Tangerine and EQ Bank — online banks with no ordinary branch network
Questions worth asking any provider
- Who certifies this product, and can I see the current certificate? A name on a website is not a fatwa; a dated certificate for your specific product is.
- Is my money insured, and by whom? Banks, credit unions and money-services businesses are covered by different schemes, or none.
- Are you licensed in Alberta? Mortgage lending and brokering are provincially licensed.
- What does it cost in total, over the full term, compared with a conventional product? Halal is not automatically dearer, but it is not automatically the same.
What this site can and cannot tell you
We checked every provider and link here against its own site and published reporting in September 2026, and we list them as a directory, not an endorsement. Products, certifications and licences change; the questions above are how you check what is true on the day you sign. For the principles behind all of it — riba, murabaha, ijara, musharaka — start with What Is Halal Financing?, and for a home, Halal Mortgages in Calgary.
Common questions
Is there an Islamic bank in Calgary?
No. No bank in Canada operates as an Islamic bank, and none of the big six offers Sharia-compliant accounts or mortgages. In Calgary, halal banking is assembled from parts: an ordinary chequing account, a specialist provider or Servus Halal for a home, and a Shariah-screened fund for investing.
Can I get a halal mortgage in Calgary?
Yes. Servus Halal, a subsidiary of Servus Credit Union, has offered a 25-year murabaha home financing product across Alberta since fall 2025, certified by the Canadian Islamic Finance Board. Manzil and EQRAZ also lend in Alberta. See our halal mortgage guide for how to compare them.
Is there an interest-free bank account in Canada?
Most no-fee chequing accounts still pay some interest — Simplii and Tangerine both do. Manzil Money is a no-interest prepaid Mastercard account, but it is a FINTRAC-registered money services business rather than a bank, so ask how your balance is protected. Many people keep an ordinary account and give any interest to charity.
Does ATB Financial offer halal banking?
Not yet. Alberta's 2024 legislation lets ATB and credit unions offer alternative-financing products like halal mortgages, and ATB has said it is studying demand, but it has no halal product today. Servus Credit Union is the Alberta lender that has launched one.
Is there an interest-free loan (qard hasan) program in Calgary?
We could not confirm a standing program at a Calgary mosque. IANA Financial, a volunteer-run Edmonton non-profit, has made interest-free loans to people across Canada since 2009. If your mosque runs one, let us know.
Where can I invest halal in Calgary?
The Wealthsimple Shariah World Equity Index ETF (WSHR) can be held in a TFSA or RRSP at most Canadian brokerages; Manzil and Wahed offer Shariah-screened portfolios; and in Calgary, Assad Wealth Management advertises halal investing and group retirement plans. Check any fund's screening and its Shariah board before investing.
