The northwest's Hyderabadi specialist, 4.7 across 1,200 reviews. Hyderabad House asks you not to stir the biryani when it arrives — the layers of rice and meat are the point, and mixing them flattens the whole thing. Mandi is on the menu too.

4. Biryani Palace — Falconridge NE

Hyderabadi and Pakistani rice dishes side by side, and unusually, Biryani Palace is best known locally for its beef biryani rather than the more common chicken. Nihari too. 4.7 across 400 reviews.

4.6 across 1,288 reviews, Muslim-run, and halal throughout. Marhaba does slow-cooked dum biryani and fish mandi alongside a broader Arabic and Indian menu. First time, order the dum biryani specifically — it is cooked to order and worth the wait over the pre-plated version.

6. Miraj — Westwinds NE

The Bangladeshi entry, and a fully halal kitchen. Miraj is known for biryani and for kala vuna, a dark, slow-cooked beef curry that is worth ordering if you have never eaten Bangladeshi food — it is the best introduction to the cuisine on any Calgary menu.

7. Khan Baba — 46 St NE

A friendly low-key storefront doing biryani, South Asian staples, and Pakistani-style pizza on the same menu. Khan Baba is 4.6 across nearly 900 reviews and one of the cheaper full meals in the northeast.

8. The Curry Culture — Chestermere

The sourcing story here is the best on this list: The Curry Culture buys its meat from the halal butcher immediately next door. That is about as traceable as a sit-down restaurant gets without a certificate on the wall. The menu is large enough that asking staff for the day's speciality is the right move.

Fatima Karahi in Castleridge is a karahi restaurant with a banquet hall attached, popular for goat biryani and beef seekh kebab — the practical choice when the question is not "where do we eat" but "where do forty of us eat". Faisal Kabab Hut in West Winds is the other large-format option, with BBQ platters as the draw.

One to confirm for yourself

Little Spice runs a biryani and butter chicken counter inside a Brick furniture store on Macleod Trail, which is exactly as odd as it sounds. It is community-sourced as halal but no reviewer mentions it directly, so ask about sourcing on a first visit. We would rather tell you that than quietly leave it off.
