The butcher-takeouts at Chestermere Station

The town's halal scene is built on a Chestermere habit: the butcher and the kitchen are the same business, and you buy the week's meat and tonight's dinner at one counter.

  • Lakeside Meat Masala, in the Chestermere Station plaza, is the strongest record in town — 4.8 from more than 370 Google reviews. Fresh-cut and marinated meats, goat, and a takeout counter whose air-fried fish and chicken are the lighter alternative to a deep-fryer dinner. Staff are named in review after review, and one describes being walked through the different cuts. No dining room; it is a shop with a kitchen.
  • The Curry Culture is the sit-down room next door — a big Indian menu, samosas, biryani and sweets, 4.4 from more than 630 reviews (the largest sample of any room in town), reservations and a dining room reviewers describe as cosy. The thing that matters most here is the sourcing: its meat comes from the halal butcher next door, which is about as traceable as a restaurant's supply gets. Two things to know before you book: Google lists it as licensed — beer, wine and cocktails — and the menu is long enough that asking the staff for the day's strength helps.

Kinniburgh: a butcher and a new shawarma counter

  • Masala Meats and Takeout on Kinniburgh Blvd is the second butcher-kitchen, 4.6 from close to 140 reviews: fresh cuts at the counter, and momos and fish pakora worth adding to the shop, plus a chicken tikka wrap that one reviewer walked out with after coming in hoping for shawarma. Takeout only.
  • Shawarma City is the new independent shawarma and donair kitchen in the same plaza — new enough that it had no Google rating when it joined this map. If you go, leave a review: somebody has to be first.

West Chestermere: pizza, and the mosque next door

  • Pizzorama in the Chestermere Plaza on Merganser Dr W — the same plaza as the town's mosque, below — is a halal pizza counter built for takeout and delivery, with an Indian accent — butter chicken and tandoori chicken pizzas, and malai paneer and malai chicken pizzas that reviewers call amazing — at 4.6 from around 100 reviews. Order the butter chicken; the regulars do.
  • Canadian Pizza Unlimited on W Creek Dr is the Chestermere branch of the unlimited-toppings chain, whose halal meat toppings are stated practice rather than a certificate; this store is listed as halal by the community Halal Map YYC, not yet verified by us. Rimpi at the counter is thanked by name, and the donair pizza is the house order. The record is mixed — 4.0 from more than 200 reviews, with complaints about off-smelling chicken and vegetables and a small $4 slice — so ask for it fresh from the oven. Open to 11pm, midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The butcher in Dawson's Landing

First Choice Meat Shop is the one shop in town that says its meat is certified rather than leaving it understood — though it names no certifying body, so ask at the counter if paperwork is what you need. That is still more than most independent butchers on this map will say. Lamb, chicken, goat and BBQ-ready cuts at 4.8 from more than 110 reviews, plus Eid catering packs that sell out close to the date; order ahead of the holiday, not during it. The air-fried fish pakora from the counter fooled at least one reviewer into thinking it was deep-fried.

Shawarma on Marina Drive

Pita King is Chestermere's Lebanese room and its best-rated sit-down restaurant: a sister to the Pita Basket shops in Calgary, 4.7 from more than 430 reviews. Family-run to the point that reviewers compare it to eating at a relative's house. Order the chicken shawarma, and do not default to plain fries — the cheesy garlic fries are the item people write about, and the baklava is the finish. Dine in, take out or delivery; good for children.

The mosque, and Friday prayers

Chestermere has a mosque of its own: the Al-Madinah Chestermere Islamic Centre, a storefront masjid run by the Chestermere Muslim Council in the Chestermere Plaza on Merganser Dr W — the five daily prayers, a sisters' section, Quran classes and plenty of parking, rated 5.0 from 30 Google reviews by people who mostly say how glad they are not to drive into Calgary any more. For Jumu'ah the published schedules disagree: the mosque's own listing shows a Friday window from 2pm and a reviewer reports the khutbah just after 3, while the council also uses the Chestermere Regional Community Association hall by the lake for its larger congregation, at 1:00 and 2:00 by the community map's account and 1:30 and 2:15 by The Hashir's. What Chestermere does not have — yet

No halal-listed fried-chicken chain — the Mary Brown's beside Pita King on Marina Drive is on none of the halal lists we use — no dessert cafe and no fine-dining room. For those, the northeast of Calgary is closer than it looks: the Saddletowne and Cornerstone plazas are fifteen to twenty minutes up Stoney Trail or along 17 Ave, and most of the northeast half of the north Calgary scene is within half an hour.
