Halal Food in Chestermere: Every Restaurant, Butcher and the Mosque

Chestermere surprised me. It's a lake town known for its beach and boats. But it has built a halal scene far bigger than its size: butcher-takeouts, a shawarma counter, pizza and a mosque. Search "halal food near me" or "halal restaurants near me" from the lake, and the answers are scattered. So I pulled them together: eleven spots, from a butcher in Dawson's Landing to the storefront mosque on Merganser Dr.

The butcher-takeouts at Chestermere Station

Here the butcher and the kitchen are often one business. You buy the week's meat and tonight's dinner at one counter.

• Lakeside Meat Masala at 175 Chestermere Station Way, Unit 202, is one of the best-rated spots in town, at 4.8 on Google. It sells fresh-cut and marinated meats and goat. The takeout counter's air-fried fish and chicken are a lighter choice than deep-fried. Staff will explain the cuts. No dining room: it's a shop with a kitchen.
• The Curry Culture is the sit-down room next door at unit 204, at 4.4 on Google. It has a big Indian menu with samosas, biryani and sweets. The room is cosy with bench seats, and you can reserve. The key point: its meat comes from the halal butcher next door, about as traceable as it gets. Also: Google lists it as licensed (beer, wine and cocktails), and the menu is long, so ask staff what's best that day.

Kinniburgh: a butcher and a new shawarma counter

• Masala Meats and Takeout at 272 Kinniburgh Blvd, unit #104, is the second butcher-kitchen, at 4.5 on Google. It has fresh cuts at the counter. From the kitchen, add steamed veggie momos, butter chicken with garlic naan, or a chicken tikka wrap. Takeout only.
• Shawarma City is a new independent shawarma and donair kitchen in the same plaza, at unit #106. It has only a few Google reviews so far, so call before you go.

West Chestermere: pizza, and the mosque next door

• Pizzorama is in the Chestermere Plaza on Merganser Dr W, the same plaza as the town's mosque. It's a halal pizza counter built for takeout and delivery, with an Indian twist, at 4.6 on Google. Try the butter chicken pizza or the malai paneer. Tell them your spice level and they'll cook to it.
• Canadian Pizza Unlimited at 107 W Creek Dr is the local branch of the unlimited-toppings chain. This branch is listed as fully halal, with no certifying body named. The donair pizza is the usual order. The record is mixed, at 4.0 on Google, with complaints about off-smelling chicken and vegetables that weren't fresh. Ask for yours fresh from the oven, and check Google for current hours.

Pizzorama and the Al-Madinah centre share a plaza, so a pizza pickup and Friday prayer are a short walk apart.

The butcher in Dawson's Landing

First Choice Meat Shop at 20 Dawson Wharf Mount is the one shop in town that says its meat is certified. It names no certifying body, though, so ask at the counter if you need paperwork. It sells lamb, chicken, goat and BBQ-ready cuts, at 4.8 on Google. Its Eid catering packs sell out close to the date, so order before the holiday, not during it.

Shawarma on Marina Drive

Pita King at 100 Marina Dr is Chestermere's Lebanese spot and its best-rated sit-down restaurant, at 4.7 on Google. It's a sister to the Pita Basket shops in Calgary. It feels family-run, and the staff are quick to help. If you want a halal restaurant near me with real seats, this is it.

Get the chicken shawarma, have the garlic fries with a wrap instead of a plain side, and finish with baklava. Dine in, take out or get delivery. It's good for kids.

The mosque, and Friday prayers

Chestermere has its own mosque: the Al-Madinah Chestermere Islamic Centre. It's a storefront masjid run by the Chestermere Muslim Council in the Chestermere Plaza on Merganser Dr W. It has the five daily prayers, a sisters' section, Quran classes and lots of parking, rated 5.0 on Google.

For Jumu'ah, check the council's current times before you go, since they change. The council also uses the Chestermere Regional Community Association hall by the lake for bigger crowds. Ask which room Friday prayer is in, and phone the council before you drive.

Modest wear

Modest Wear and Hijabs on Chelsea Rd is the only modest-wear and hijab shop in town I found. It's owner-run, and Ramadan gifts are a common buy. Calgary's bigger boutiques are in the clothing roundup.

What Chestermere doesn't have yet
