“Are Skittles halal in Canada?” is the top candy question here. Smarties, Maynards, Haribo, Starburst and the Halloween bag come next. Most answers online are copied from American or British packs, but the same brand often uses a different recipe here.
So I dug into the Canadian versions. Below is the verdict for each product as it is sold in Canada, with the reason, source and date. Each one comes from IlmHub's askhalal.ca, a Canadian project that writes to the maker and publishes a dated ruling, or from the label itself.
Halal marshmallows: read the pack
I couldn't find a published marshmallow ruling yet. Their gelatin is pork-based unless the pack says otherwise. So look for a halal, kosher or vegetarian mark. An unmarked bag stays unverified.
Is it halal? Three ingredients decide it
Candy is simpler than it looks. Sugar, syrup, colour and flavour are halal by default. Almost every “is it halal?” answer turns on one of three things:
- Gelatin (in gummies, chews, marshmallows and some chewy mints). It's pork-based unless the pack says otherwise, and in Canada the pack usually says nothing.
- Carmine (E120, cochineal), a red made from insects, and confectioner's glaze (shellac), the shine on jelly beans and some hard candy. Many scholars avoid them; others allow them.
- Alcohol, used as a carrier in flavourings and in liqueur chocolates.

Halal candy in Canada: the checked list
“Halal” means IlmHub rated the Canadian product halal or halal suitable. “Read the pack” means the label is clean, but there's no ruling. “Doubtful” is IlmHub's word when a maker wouldn't answer. Recipes change, so check the date.

The ones people argue about
Skittles and Nestlé Smarties are good news: no gelatin in Canada.
Maynards is the interesting one. The whole Canadian line uses modified corn starch instead of gelatin, so Swedish Berries pass. But IlmHub rated Sour Patch Kids doubtful in 2024 over flavourings the maker wouldn't detail. Nobody has reviewed Fuzzy Peach at all.
With Haribo, the country matters. The German Goldbears in every corner store use pork gelatin, so they're out. The Haribo Halal range made in Turkey says “Helal” on the front and uses beef gelatin. It's certified, and the halal grocers stock it.
Starburst is the letdown. Britain dropped the gelatin. Canada didn't, and the pack still lists it.
Where to buy halal candy in Calgary
The big brands that pass are in every supermarket: Skittles, Smarties, Coffee Crisp, Dare gummies, Twizzlers. The Walmart and Costco article covers the Kirkland Jelly Belly bag.

- Afghan Bakery and Halal Butcher on 32 Ave NE pairs fresh Afghan bread with a halal meat counter. It keeps candy on the shelves too.

For a Halloween bowl every kid can eat: fun-size Skittles, Smarties, Kit Kat, Coffee Crisp, Aero, Caramilk, Twizzlers and Dare gummies all pass. Rockets and no-name gummy bears don't.
