I looked into halal desserts in Calgary, and there's a lot more than baklava after a shawarma. There's a real dessert scene here. You'll find a late-night cafe with a chocolate fountain, a five-branch dessert chain, huge milkshakes and proper South Asian sweets shops. Here's what I found.
D Spot: five halal dessert cafes
D Spot on 17th Ave is the heart of the halal dessert scene. Think waffles, crepes, milkshakes and a chocolate fountain. There's pizza and poutine if you want something savoury, and the kitchen says the meat in its savoury dishes is halal. It has an on-site prayer space, which no other branch has. It's the busiest dessert room in Calgary by far, rated 4.6 on Google.
The other four branches share the menu but have no prayer space:
- D Spot North East on 36 St NE is the busiest of them. Can't decide? Staff point people to the Krunchy Kunafa.
- D Spot Southwest in Haysboro is the highest-rated, at 4.8 on Google. Its halal status isn't confirmed, so ask staff about ingredients first.
- D Spot Sage Hill is the only one north of Stoney Trail. Start with the Biscoff milk cake, and ask staff about halal before you order.
- D Spot South in Mahogany is the farthest south, in Westman Village. It's a sit-down room, better for dates and groups than takeaway.
Milkshakes as the main event
In Cityscape (NE), Holy Shakes Calgary is all about over-the-top milkshakes and freakshakes. They're piled so high they're as much a photo as a drink. Everything on the menu is halal. There's Indian-inspired savoury food too, but the shakes are the reason to go. Get the chocolate truffle loaded shake. It's rated 4.5 on Google.
South Asian sweets shops
Utsav Sweets and Restaurant
Utsav Sweets in Westwinds is a Bangladeshi sweets shop and restaurant. At 4.8 on Google, it's one of the highest-rated spots I found. The kitchen does kacchi biryani and South Asian mains, and the sweets counter is the big draw. Its own website says the food is halal. If you order one thing from the kitchen, make it the kacchi biryani.
Haveli Sweets & Restaurant
Also in the NE, Haveli Sweets is a family-run halal Indian and Pakistani restaurant and sweets shop. Butter chicken is the dish it's known for, and there's biryani too. The cooked food is more reliable than the sweets, so check the mithai looks fresh before you buy. It has an on-site prayer space as well. So you can eat a halal meal, pick up sweets and pray, all in one stop.
Bakery desserts

The free baklava trick
Some shawarma spots give out free baklava with your order. Zaitoona Shawarma in the NW is one. Staff there often bring baklava and tea to the table. Jerusalem Shawarma on 32 Ave NE uses halal meat throughout. Its sweets are as big a deal as its wraps, and many people go to this branch for the kunafa. Want dessert on purpose? Are desserts automatically halal?
No. Gelatin is the usual trap. Marshmallows, gummy toppings, some mousses and cheesecake bases use pork gelatin unless the kitchen buys otherwise. Go to 17th Ave if it's late or you want the prayer space. Pick Haysboro for the quietest room and the top rating. North East is open to 2am on weekends. Sage Hill and Mahogany are good if they're closest. The menu is the same everywhere.
