Eating out is the easy half. If you cook, you need to know where to buy the meat. Calgary has dozens of halal stores, butchers and grocers, which makes choosing the hard part.
If you have ever typed "halal grocery near me" or "yyc grocery calgary" into your phone, here is what I found. I ranked them by rating against review volume, and noted what each one is for. A Bengali fish counter and a Lebanese bakery are not really competing.
1. Village Pita Bakery - 28 St SE
Village Pita is a Lebanese bakery and grocery that has been open since the late 1970s. It is known for meat pies and zaatar pies. Go for the zaatar alone, even if you buy meat elsewhere.
2. Bangla Bazar SuperMarket - Westwinds NE
Bangla Bazar is the Bengali and South Asian specialist. The counter cuts meat and fish to order, and the shelves carry a wide range of Bengali and South Asian ingredients. It is at 4851 Westwinds Dr NE, one of several halal butchers and grocers around Westwinds.
3. Shaganappi Mediterranean Market - two locations
More than 25 years in the city, with halal meat and a deep Middle Eastern import selection. The 17 Ave SW shop at 3919 17 Ave SW, near Marda Loop, is the original. It also does shawarma and bakery items. The Macleod Trail store rates a little higher and offers delivery.
4. Lakeside Meat Masala - Chestermere
4.8 on Google. Lakeside is a butcher and an Indian takeout counter in one, at 175 Chestermere Station Way Unit 202. Fresh-cut marinated meats and goat share a kitchen with ready-to-eat food. No dining room, so plan on takeout or delivery.
5. First Choice Meat Shop - Dawson's Landing, Chestermere
Rated 4.8, at 20 Dawson Wharf Mount. First Choice cuts lamb, chicken and goat fresh every day, plus marinated items and BBQ-ready cuts. Its website says the meat is certified, but names no certifying body and does not mention halal. If paperwork matters, ask who stands behind the certificate. It takes bulk orders for Eid, and the Eid catering packs are worth ordering ahead.
6. Safari Meat Market - 17 Ave SE
Safari is a wholesaler that also sells retail, at 5010 17 Ave SE. It buys from farmers who avoid antibiotics and growth hormones. It is rated 4.7 on Google.
7. Zak's Mart - Macleod Trail S
Fresh halal cuts, groceries and a small prayer space for customers. Zak's is handy if you want to pray on the way, and it stocks most traditional Pakistani, Indian and Arabic items.
8. Madina Halal Meat & Grocery - Westwinds NE
Madina sits at 4.6 on Google in the Westwinds Business Park. It carries meat, chicken and grocery staples. Freshness is the thing to watch: on a big bulk order, check the meat at the counter before you leave.
9. Khalid Halal Meat & Grocery - Parkhill
Fresh and frozen halal meat plus general groceries, on Macleod Trail just south of downtown. Khalid is the easy one if you live in the inner city and don't want to drive to the northeast. It is a shop only, with no kitchen.
10. Mediterranean Halal Meats & Deli - 17 Ave SE
Beef, lamb, goat, chicken and fish, plus a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern grocery aisle. Mediterranean Halal Meats is one of five halal butchers on one stretch of 17 Ave SE.
The 17 Ave SE corridor: halal stores on one street
If you don't want to choose, drive to Forest Lawn. Between 3917 and 5320 on 17 Ave SE you pass:
Green Cedars Food Mart, Mediterranean Halal Meats, African Halal Meats (with East and West African specialty groceries), TAAJ Halal Meats at 4721 17 Ave SE Unit C, Safari at 5010, and Atlas Halal Meat. Five butchers and a food mart, all on one street.
The northeast has its own cluster around Westwinds. In the inner north, Tebyan on Edmonton Trail is worth knowing for Mediterranean, North African and South Asian groceries.

Inner city and west. Dahlak Al Food Store is a clean, well-stocked corner shop on 14 Ave SW in the Beltline. Its halal butcher counter cuts lamb and beef to order, and the shelves carry East African staples. Tehran Grocery on Kensington Rd NW is the Persian specialist. Caspian Bakery & Supermarket at 3404 3 Ave NW bakes its own bread and sells Persian groceries, with no butcher. Gandour Halal Meats & Deli on 37 St SW is a butcher and deli for the west side.
Northeast. Calgary Wholesale Market on 33 St NE sells whole lamb and goat carcasses at wholesale prices, and cheaper again in bulk. Handy for Eid or a big family gathering; the wholesale halal meat guide has the other bulk sellers. Pak Foods at 10960 42 St NE is a Pakistani grocery and butcher with a restaurant attached. Savana Meat Shop & Takeout on 88 Ave NE is a butcher with a takeout kitchen in the Savanna plaza. Alta Halal Meat is a fully halal butcher and small grocery on 36 St NE.
A few odd ones out. Chinook Cheese on 32 Ave NE is a fully halal Arabic grocery and cheesemaker. Byblos Bakery on 23 St NE is a Lebanese bakery whose pita is sold in supermarkets. Staff have not always confirmed its halal status, so check first. Ariana Bazaar on 34 Ave NE is half Afghan grocery, half fabric and clothing.
One caution: Gandour has a 2.8 on Google, which is low for a butcher. Read the reviews before a big order.
A note on certification
Many of these butchers name no third-party certifier. For a butcher, that matters less than for a restaurant: halal slaughter is the whole business. If you need certification, First Choice is the one whose website claims it, without naming the certifier. Everywhere else, ask at the counter.

Second, how to read the ratings. Bangla Bazar sits at 4.0 while Damascus Butcher is at 4.8. Big supermarkets get rated on lines and parking too.
Use the score to decide what to ask, not whether to go. Ask where the lamb was slaughtered, and if the mince was ground that morning.
