The highest-rated butcher on this list at 4.8, and the one that advertises itself as certified halal rather than leaving it as understood — a real distinction when you care about paperwork. Beef, lamb, goat, chicken and fish, plus a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern grocery aisle. Mediterranean Halal Meats is one of five halal butchers on the same stretch of one street, which brings us to the useful part of this article.

The 17 Ave SE corridor is the real answer

If you do not want to choose, drive to Forest Lawn. Between 3917 and 5320 on 17 Ave SE you will pass Mediterranean Halal Meats, African Halal Meats — which caters specifically to Calgary's East and West African communities — TAAJ Halal Meats, Safari, and Atlas Halal Meat. Five butchers, one street, and you can walk between them.

The northeast has its own cluster around Westwinds and Falconridge, and if you are in the far north, Tebyan on Edmonton Trail is worth knowing for its North and East African grocery selection specifically.

A note on certification

Most independent butchers in Calgary do not display a third-party certificate. For a butcher this matters less than it does for a restaurant — halal slaughter is the entire basis of the business rather than one line on a menu — but if certification specifically is what you need, First Choice is the one on this list that advertises it.
