Halal Seafood in Calgary: Boil Houses, Fish and Chips, and Lobster

Every time a new seafood boil opens in Calgary, someone asks "is lobster halal?" And "is Captain's Boil halal?" comes up in local groups so often it has its own TikTok page. It's really one question in two parts. What do scholars say about shellfish? And what actually goes into the pot at a Calgary boil house?

I dug into both. Then I looked at where seafood is the reason to go, from an English chippy on Macleod Trail to the fish counters in Westwinds. Here's what I found, and what to ask at the places that aren't fully halal kitchens.

Is seafood halal? The short version

Seafood is the one kind of meat on a menu with no slaughter ruling. Nothing has to be hand-cut or blessed. The schools differ on which sea creatures count.

• Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali: essentially all seafood is permissible - fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, mussels - with small exceptions like frogs. Gulf, Egyptian, North African and Somali communities mostly follow these.
• Hanafi: most South Asian Sunnis follow this. Fish is halal. Many Hanafi scholars allow shrimp too, though it's disputed. Crab, lobster and shellfish are generally not eaten.
• Shia: fish with scales only, which rules out eel and catfish. Shrimp is allowed, lobster and crab are not.

So is lobster halal? It depends on whose list you follow. A Somali family and a Pakistani family can sit in the same boil house, order differently, and both be right. That's not mine to settle. What I can help with is everything around the seafood: what else is in the pot, whether the fryer is shared, and whether alcohol is served.

Seafood boil Calgary: the two boil houses

Both work the same way. Pick your seafood by the pound, a sauce and a heat level. It comes in the bag it was cooked in, with a bib. Neither has a halal certificate or makes a halal claim. The community treats both as halal-friendly. Both are also licensed: Google lists beer and wine at Bag O' Crab and a full bar at The Captain's Boil. For some families, that settles it.

Bag O' Crab is in Pacific Place on 36 St NE and takes reservations. There's also a Macleod Trail branch in Shawnessy, again with no halal certificate. If you're new to boils, pick the garlic butter sauce. The listing says there's no pork on the menu, but nothing published confirms a halal claim. Ask about the sausage in the combo platters: what is it made of? And ask if the fryer is shared.

The Captain's Boil is on Centre Street North. Dungeness crab, shrimp, crawfish and mussels go by the pound, tossed in Cajun or Asian-style sauce at your heat level. Its own menu has bacon-wrapped scallops and chicken with no halal claim. It has no certificate, makes no halal claim, and serves alcohol.

Is Captain's Boil halal? Nothing on its own pages or listing says so. Since seafood needs no slaughter ruling, the answer comes down to what you ask at the counter.

Halal fish and chips near me

Some English-style chippies say on the menu that they are halal. Check what that claim covers before you order.

The Burger Mechanic near Chinook is the one to know. It's an English-style chippy and smash-burger shop on Macleod Trail SE, in the $ price band. Sometimes there's a free cup of soup while you wait. Its menus say the burgers are 100% halal. Confirm the fish and chips with the shop rather than assume.

Chicken on the Way in Airdrie hand-batters fresh cod, not frozen. One reviewer gave the fish five stars on its own. Fritou Chicken in Carrington has butterfly shrimp and chips on a menu that goes well past fried chicken. In the northwest, Kolachi BBQ & Grill in Sage Hill serves lightly battered Lahori fish on its mixed kebab platter, with halal meat throughout.

Middle Eastern kitchens grill fish like everything else. Jerusalem Shawarma's McKnight room has a grilled fish plate with rice, hummus and salad. Sallora on 16 Ave NW shares a kitchen with the Jerusalem Shawarma next door, but is better known for chicken mandi and falafel.

South Asian fried fish is its own thing. Spice Hut on 4 St NE has fish pakora, but its meat's halal status isn't stated, so ask first. Lakeside Meat Masala in Chestermere does air-fried fish. Savana Meat Shop fries fish in its kitchen. La Jawab does a prawn curry, and Google lists it as licensed.

Sushi, hot pot and the prawn question

Fish is halal in every school (Shia rulings want scales, so no eel). With sushi, the problem is never the fish. It's the mirin in the rice, the sauces, the imitation crab and a shared kitchen.

Arashi Sushi in Royal Vista has a dedicated halal menu, with nigiri from a Japan-trained chef and a halal ramen. Google lists it as serving beer. The full story is in halal sushi in Calgary. Golden Dragon Hot Pot in Brentwood, the city's first halal hot pot, puts prawns on the platter next to its certified beef and lamb. That's a clean answer if your school allows shrimp.

Fish counters for cooking at home

Most halal butchers here sell only meat. These also do fish.

YYC Halal Meats Fish & Grocery in Westwinds has a fish counter next to its halal meat counter. No third-party certifier is listed. It's rated 4.8 on Google, and a second store in Nolan Hill covers the far northwest.

Meatplus on 39 Ave NE sells halal meat and seafood under one roof. The seafood counter is a real draw, but read one detailed one-star review about a bad fish order first.

Bangla Bazar cuts fish to order for Bengali cooking. A recent one-star review was about the fish, so look before you buy. Shawdesi Bazaar Foods & Catering carries fish and pantry goods for that same kitchen. Calgary Wholesale Market on 33 St NE, new this year, sells fresh fish next to wholesale-priced meat.

The steakhouse exception

Licensed steakhouses have seafood too. Ruth's Chris has jumbo spicy prawns. Chairman's has prawn cocktail and scallops. Neither lists its seafood as halal. Their halal menus cover chicken, lamb and steak. The seafood isn't the issue. The alcohol and the shared kitchen are. Halal steak in Calgary covers what each one will and won't confirm.

The short version

Fish is halal everywhere. Shellfish depends on your school, and that's a talk for your scholar, not a restaurant.
