Is Mary Brown's halal in Calgary? Mostly yes. The chain's own store locator tags 16 of its 17 Calgary-area restaurants "Halal" (checked 9 October 2026). That includes Airdrie, Chestermere and Cochrane.

The odd one out is Shepard. It has no tag, yet it's one of two stores whose certificate we have checked ourselves. So treat the tag as good evidence, and the certificate at the counter as the proof.

Mary Brown's has no chain-wide halal programme. Each franchise decides, so the answer is almost all stores, not every one.

Which Mary Brown's are halal in Calgary?

The third column is the Halal tag on the chain's store locator. The last column is everything else I found.

Five tagged stores have no first-hand check yet: Falsbridge in Falconridge, Deer Ridge, Macleod Trail, Chestermere and Cochrane. Go on the tag and the counter check below. There's no store in Okotoks; Deer Ridge and Shepard are nearest. Google lists Kensington as temporarily closed, so check before you go.

And Marrybrown, one word, is an unrelated Malaysian chain. Calgary's stores are all Mary Brown's, from Newfoundland.

Why it differs from store to store

Mary Brown's said it plainly on X in 2021, when a customer asked: "Some of our locations are halal depending on surrounding demographics." Halal, it added, is about how the chicken is prepared before it arrives; stores cut, marinate, bread and cook it in house (Mary Brown's on X).

So the franchisee picks the chicken supply, and the tag follows the store. About three in five stores across Canada carry it. In Alberta, nearly all do.

Popeyes certifies its Canadian chicken chain-wide. KFC's halal programme stops at the Ontario border. Mary Brown's sits in between: local choices, but in Calgary nearly all went the same way.

The published menu is chicken, taters, sandwiches and sides, with no bacon or pork item. So at a halal store, the question is the chicken supply and the paperwork, not pork in the fryer.

How to check a store in thirty seconds

• Ask to see the certificate, and read the name on it. In October 2024, CBC Marketplace sent undercover reporters into Toronto-area chicken chains. At both Mary Brown's they visited, staff showed a meat supplier's halal certificate as if it covered the restaurant. One had expired. The company said it would keep training front-line staff. A supplier's certificate shows the chicken arrived halal. It isn't the restaurant's certificate.
• Check the date. Paper stays on the wall after it lapses.
• Ask what it covers. Usually the chicken. Ask about the gravy or a sauce by name.

The best-rated halal Mary Brown's, and what to order

• Shepard, 130 Ave SE - 4.7 on Google, and the steadiest over the years. People drive past nearer stores for the chicken burger. Ask for extra seasoning if you like it spiced.
• Cityscape - 4.6. Fresh, hot chicken and a clean store, and regulars plan around the Monday specials.
• Northland - 4.6. The Batter's Box (six pieces, fries, gravy and two biscuits) is the value order. A couple of recent reviews mention tired oil, so go when it's busy.
• West Springs - 4.9 on a young listing, and the reviews are mostly about the staff. One found the small sandwich pricey and couldn't eat inside, so phone ahead to sit down.
• 46 Ave SE in Highfield - 4.4. Regulars say the food beats the other Calgary stores. Check the bag on takeout: missing items are the repeated complaint.
• Quarry Park - 4.3 overall, but weaker lately. Count the pieces, and ask for a fresh batch if the chicken looks old.
