“Pakistani haleem near me.” “Hyderabadi haleem near me.” “Chapli kebab near me.” “Nihari near me.” “Kebab roll near me.” These are dish searches, and they deserve a dish answer: which halal kitchens in Calgary actually make each one, going by their menus and by what their reviewers say they ate. Almost all of them are in the northeast, which is where the Pakistani and Afghan kitchens of this city are.
Haleem
Wheat, lentils and meat slow-cooked until they collapse into one thick, savoury porridge, finished with fried onion, ginger and lemon. It takes hours, so it is a specialist’s dish, and worth asking about before you drive.
- Chillies, 17th Avenue SE — a Karachi-style kitchen that specialises in haleem and nihari; regulars rate the haleem alongside the chaat.
- Spice Hut, 4 St NE — haleem, nihari and seekh kebab are the regulars’ picks.
- Mirchi, Beltline — longtime fans rate the haleem and the biryani highly, though reviews have flagged inconsistency, so check the latest before you go.
- Calgary Produce Market, Westwinds — a halal grocery and butcher whose takeout counter sells haleem and nali nihari to take home.
Hyderabadi haleem is its own style — meatier, spiced differently, a Ramadan staple. The map has Hyderabadi specialists — Marhaba in Westwinds, Hyderabad House in Royal Vista, Hyderabad Biryani House on Sunridge Way — but nothing we can check shows haleem on their regular menus, so they are the ones to ask, and Ramadan is when to ask. If you know one that makes it, tell us.
Nihari
Beef or mutton shank braised overnight in a spiced, bone-marrow-rich gravy, eaten with naan — a Karachi and Delhi breakfast, and a comfort dinner here. Nali nihari adds the marrow bone itself.
- Chillies — the most emphatic reviews in the city (“most delicious nihari in Calgary”). Nihari is traditionally an evening dish; phone ahead if you are going early.
- Raja Foods, Marlborough — a weekend-breakfast institution for halwa puri and nihari, 4.5 across more than 2,300 Google reviews.
- Sara’s Cuisine, Falconridge — the other halwa-puri-and-nihari breakfast ritual in the NE.
- Apna Karachi Kitchen, Westwinds — the nihari and the Delhi-style beef gola kebab are its most-praised dishes; go early at weekends.
- Harum Restaurant, Castleridge — mutton nali nihari is its signature. Newer, with a small review count, but nihari specialists are rare.
- Biryani Palace (Biryani Adda), Falconridge — known for beef biryani and nihari side by side.

Chapli kebab
The flat, wide Peshawari patty of minced beef with crushed coriander seed, pomegranate seed and chilli, shallow-fried until the edges crisp. Easy to make badly, which is why the reviews matter more here than anywhere.
- Peshawari Kabab Hut, Westwinds — known for it, and named by other kitchens’ customers as the benchmark for the Peshawari style.
- Shinwari Karahi, Castleridge — Peshawari chapli kabab is the second signature after the karahi.
- Kabob Fusion, 27 St NE — the chapli draws its own exclamations in reviews, next to the BBQ platter.
- Kolachi BBQ & Grill (Sage Hill) — the NW option; reviewers praise a beef chapli that is crisp outside and juicy within.
Shami kebab
The softer cousin: minced meat and chana dal ground smooth, shaped into small patties and fried, often eaten in a bun or alongside rice. It turns up more often in catering trays and iftar spreads than on a café menu, and the few Calgary reviews that mention it are mixed — so we are not naming a favourite yet. Ask at the Pakistani and Afghan kitchens above; most make it.
Kebab rolls and paratha rolls
Karachi street food: a kebab, chutney and onion rolled in a paratha. Two places draw reviews for it: Kolachi BBQ & Grill at The Port, where a reviewer called the kebab roll “incredibly delicious”, and Karachi Bites on 47 St NE, whose roll parathas one reviewer said taste just like Karachi’s.
Before you go
Slow-cooked dishes run out, and several of these are breakfast dishes that stop at lunchtime. Call ahead for haleem and nihari especially. Every place here is on the live map with its hours — and if your favourite is missing, the submit button on the map is how it gets added.
