Calgary calls itself a steak town, and for a long time the halal version of that meant buying a good cut from the butcher and firing up your own grill. That has quietly changed. A handful of the city's proper steakhouses — white-tablecloth, dry-aged, the works — now prepare halal steak, and one of them keeps a dedicated halal menu. The catch is that none of them is a fully halal kitchen, so how you order matters as much as where you go.
The dedicated halal menu
Ruth's Chris Steak House, at the base of the Calgary Tower, is the clearest offer in the city: not an option buried in the regular menu but a separate halal menu with halal-prepared chicken, lamb and select steaks. For a chain steakhouse that is genuinely unusual, and it makes Ruth's Chris the easiest answer for a celebration dinner where half the table keeps halal and the other half wants the classic sizzling-butter experience.
Halal Alberta beef, upmarket
Modern Steak is the local name in ranch-specific Alberta beef, and both rooms serve halal-prepared steak options — the Stephen Avenue original (4.4 across 1,600 reviews) and Southport in the SW, the stronger-rated of the two at 4.7 from more than 1,800. The Southport room will provide a halal certificate on request, and asking for it is exactly what you should do: these are halal options inside a conventional kitchen, and the ask is what routes your order down the right path.
Major Tom, forty floors above downtown, is the date-night version — halal-certified Benchmark Angus beef and chicken dishes with the best dining-room view in the city. It anchors our fancy halal restaurants guide for a reason.
The south side
Chairman's Steakhouse in Mahogany prepares its ribeye, Australian tomahawk, chicken and lamb halal — one of very few upscale halal steak options south of Glenmore, and worth knowing about if the alternative is driving downtown on a Friday night.
How to order at all of them
Say "halal" when you book, and again when you order. Every kitchen above runs halal preparation alongside conventional service, so the request is the mechanism — it is what gets the right cut, the right handling and, where offered, the certificate. If you would rather skip the asking entirely and grill your own, our halal grocery guide and the city's halal BBQ rooms have you covered.
The short version
Ruth's Chris for the dedicated menu, Modern Steak for Alberta beef with a certificate on request, Major Tom for the occasion, Chairman's for the deep south. Book ahead, say halal twice.
