from GoogleThis is my first time in Calgary so I've been trying steaks at different places and so far this has been my favorite. I've had pretty good steak in Montreal, but this eclipses all of them. Not only is all the food superb but the experience/atmosphere of the rooftop patio feels amazing. Seb S. was very knowledgeable of the food and drinks (including the recommended cooking of the steak I chose). It was fun talking to someone who also recently came to Calgary. Never got to choose my own steak knife before, that definitely elevated the experience for me. I recently got a great new job and this is the first time that it feels like I actually celebrated that achievement. Cannot recommend enough.
This place is way better than most rooftop restaurants in Toronto! Our waiter informed us of the date night special, where two meals will make your drinks free. We assumed that it applied to alcoholic drinks which we don't indulge in. Our waiter was amazing though, he gave us the special anyway. He was really attentive and friendly. The food was amazing too. I'd definitely recommend getting the mushrooms as a side for your steak. Also, they have halal steak. Both the regular and the wagyu are halal. Which is a rare find for a steak house. Would definitely visit again next time I'm in Calgary.
What a great experience!! I took my Mom here for her birthday. We tried their 5 course dinner with wine pairing for the YYC Food Expo 2026. The dishes tasted incredible, and the wine paired perfectly. The entire staff was amazing, especially our server (Dan). Everyone made my Mom feel so special for her birthday.
I wanted to try a local steakhouse instead of a chain and took the risk, wasn't worth it unfortunately. One of the worst steakhouse experiences I have ever had worldwide. Judging by other reviews, I must of gotten a bad cook...let me explain. The menu and reviews looked great, which let me to this spot. There is a posh dining area and rooftop patio, I opted for the rooftop patio as it was summer and mid-day in the sun. Tons of options on the menu, as well as drink options. Great drink happy hour menu (great presentation as well). Heavy discounts on menu, see attached pictures. Almost so many discounts, it started to make me second guess... On paper, the steak steaks looked great and bountiful in choices. I don't remember, but I either ordered rare or medium rare. Oh there was a crust, just like Anakin Skywalker coming out of lava pit after being cut in half by Obi Wan Kenobi. I could not believe it. On top, the inside of the steak grain was wet / mushy leading me to believe the steak was not properly at room temperature before cooking. I think out of all the steak meals I have ordered in the world, this is definitely a top 3 steak I should of returned. The most odd fact was the vibe. There was a DJ playing heavy Caribbean music on the rooftop patio, is this a "fancy steakhouse" or happy hour Caribbean drink summer patio? I wasn't sure if I was at Caribana or a "fancy steakhouse". Very hard to recommend given the experience, but I feel it was just a odd day out. Maybe, MAYBE if I came at dinner time and ate inside; possibly I would of had a "fancy steakhouse" experience? Hard to fathom.
Went for the midnight pancake breakfast and it wasn’t busy like expected but that was good cause we got seated fast. They give you truffle popcorn at the table complimentary and omg it’s sooooo yummy. I had the Brussels sprouts which were delicious (has honey) and the mushrooms were also good too. We got the cheese toast but it is not what I was thinking it would be so I would not get it again as it is not cheesy at all. The DJ (Kav) played good music so it was a nice atmosphere (aside from the armies of mosquitos having us as their midnight snack). I would go there again as it was a nice vibe and I can’t stop thinking of the popcorn 🤤
I have debated leaving a review for a few days now and have decided that I think I will. My family and I had visited this location a few years ago while they were visiting and we loved it so much we decided to return. This visit however fell very very short. My girlfriend is vegan and I know a lot of people may think to not come to a steak house with a vegan but nonetheless people like to be included and there are always options. The server we had was an older lady and everything seemed fine until it wasn’t. She gave the vibe that she was irritated she had to explain/accommodate to someone who doesn’t eat meat. Cool everyone has their own views but my girlfriend asked about the hummus- a notoriously veggie dish. She gets down on. my girlfriends level excited to explain it to her and makes sure she knows there is butter and milk within items. My girlfriend is fine with this , upon bringing the hummus it has a mountain of beef on top that was not mentioned. When asked to return it her and another gentleman stood there with their hands in their heads not knowing what to do? She then became dismissive and a bit rude in the way she took the plate and comments she made. My mom and I shared a $300 platter of steak that arrived cold. My mom questioned why it came on the platter it did now as it used to come on a warm sizzling platter as it got cold very very fast. Our server asked us condescendingly if we would like our steaks microwaved!!! Safe to say we will not be returning again, was a pretty sour experience. Went to omo last night instead and was blown away by food and service. take your money elsewhere this place does not care anymore.
Update based on our last visit: We used to love this location of Modern Steak specifically for Trevor, for special occasions he really went above and beyond to make you feel special. We went last week for my partner's birthday and they made a very lovely card for him, but they had let go of Trevor and instead the server was lovely but the complimentary popcorn didn't come, there wasn't a lot of check ins, my steak was overcooked and they said they would comp something for it. They brought us a baked Alaska that we didn't ask for instead of one of the desserts we did ask for to be comped.(and she overheard that I don't like the lemon and requested it be left off which is so lovely but unfortunately made the dessert overbearingly swee and dry ) but there was no free birthday dessert or drink or anything to actually make it feel like a special occasion whereas the last two times we had birthdays there I had a free bottle of wine and free dessert and there was a free round of drinks for my partner and dessert and we got so many other people to come and experience it because of that reason. Plus the food is generally good, BUT for $80 for a steak it's almost unforgivable for it to be overdone, they were out of the steak my partner wanted so a more expensive steak had to be ordered for the size. The Brussels were drowning in sauce, Plus the "Chocolate" dessert they had is different but the same name and it was so incredibly dry. Everything was more expensive but lost the quality. It feels like without Trevor it really lost its heart, the entire vibe felt off as soon as we sat down I'm afraid that we won't be back in January with our parents like we had planned. Old review : My partner has been to this location a hand full of times, most notably for his birthday this year and they took amazing care of him and his group of friends, Trevor especially made the night special with his magic. So he had booked us there for my birthday there this past weekend, and when I tell you I've never felt so looked after and so special by all of the staff there from the front end complimenting my outfit, arriving at our table and seeing roses and a birthday card and taking our coats and our server being so helpful with the menu (and bringing us an extra bowl of truffle popcorn for my birthday), the food was absolutely delicious and the accompanying salts for your steaks to really elevate them was such a great touch. They have an extensive wine selection and the desserts were also delicious, we had the baked Alaska and the Creme Brulee! Plus Trevor again making you feel like royalty and both of them going above and beyond to make not even just you but the person/people you're with feel special (I'm not going to lie, I felt like royalty) I couldn't recommend this location or Trevor enough. Specifically planned our Sunday around shucktober, due to misinformation when promoting, multiple people were waiting to be seated in a restaurant that “wasn’t open” during the time specified on the flyers. The Manager was rude and unhelpful, basically blaming us for following the instructions on the advertisement. I will no longer be attending this location as I typically do for business lunches. With the amount of people inquiring, they should’ve opened for business OR double checked how they were marketing the deal. Disappointed.
Everything was amazing. Honestly the best steak I have had so far in Calgary. We went today (Sunday) for the Sunday dining special, the value was so good and yummy. We had the 18oz steak with sides, cheese bread, house salad, baked alaska for dessert as a part of the deal. The food was SO good , like literally every bite was so delicious. I was so impressed with the service as well. Firstly, starting off with the hostesses who were kind and friendly , our server Tanisha who went above and beyond, bartender who presented our drinks very nicely and the guys bringing out our food explaining every dish in detail - everything felt so carefully curated and intentional and truly felt like an experience rather than just a restaurant to have dinner. Our server was the perfect amount of balance between attentive and giving us space, she checked up on us the perfect amount and nothing felt rushed. She was genuine and really nice. I am honestly shocked this was our first time coming to Modern Steak, the standards are very high here, ambiance is modern and cozy and the price to value ratio is on point. We will be back 100%, can’t wait for the next time 👍😊
Came here on Valentines day and had their 5 course dinner. They had pretty good options available, and the service was top notch. Our waiter was very attentive and even over heard me talking about my fav cocktail and he offered to make it even tho its not on the menu. The steak was perfectly done and we absolutely loved the brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. We were lucky to get seated upstairs as it was much quieter and intimate.
I came to celebrate my birthday, and one of the chefs, Ryan, brought out the appetizer he prepared: a sesame-marinated kago inside seared garlic brioche with a sweet soy glaze. Creative, flavorful, and unforgettable. Our server, Angie S. was extremely helpful, guiding us through the menu and explaining where the beef was sourced from and what made each cut unique. She was very attentive throughout our whole meal always making sure we had what we needed! Dessert was another Ryan special! A vanilla panna cotta with red-wine pear reduction, toasted pine nuts, mint, and a cherry—light, balanced, and delicious. Together they made my birthday dinner all the better! I Highly recommend this place for a personal, top tier service and a quality dining experience!

At 100 8 Avenue SE on Stephen Avenue, this upscale downtown steakhouse has halal-prepared steak options alongside its regular menu. It is not a halal kitchen, so say what you need when you book and again when you order.
The set dining special is the best value: an 18oz steak with sides, cheese bread, house salad and Baked Alaska for dessert. The steaks come from ranch-specific Alberta beef and Kobe beef, and servers explain where each cut is from. Truffle popcorn arrives at the table free, and the Brussels sprouts are well liked.
The patio and the rooms
The rooftop patio is a highlight, with a lovely atmosphere, and the upstairs room is quieter and more intimate. Set menus are offered for special occasions, and there is a pancake breakfast menu too. Diners say the steak is perfectly done.
Good to know
Diners praise the attentive servers and the knowledgeable staff, who can explain the menu and the drinks. The Southport branch also offers halal steak options. Book ahead for the quieter upstairs room.
