Calgary has seven full-time Islamic schools on nine campuses, teaching the Alberta curriculum alongside Islamic education, usually with Quran and Arabic. On top of those, many mosques run weekend or evening Quran classes. Three of the full-time Muslim schools in Calgary run as faith-based programs inside public school divisions. Yearly fees for Grade 1 and up ran from nothing (Al-Qaim, by its own account) to $3,600 in 2026-27.

Calgary Islamic School
Calgary Islamic School is a K-12 faith-based alternative program run by Prairie Rose Public Schools on two campuses. The Akram Jomaa campus at 2612 37 Ave NE, near the Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre, has over 1,000 students. The Omar Bin Al-Khattab campus at 225 28 St SE teaches K-9, with the small Ar Rahma musallah in the same complex. Islamic studies, Arabic and Quran memorization (tahfeez) are part of the program. Applications aren't first come, first served: siblings go first, then campus transfers, then new families, who do entrance tests and a family interview.
Green Dome Islamic School
This is the school of the Green Dome mosque, Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Assembly, at 4616 80 Ave NE. Some people search for it as "Al Madina Islamic School", after the mosque's formal name. Prairie Land Public School Division runs it. Its 2026-27 fee sheet lists Kindergarten to Grade 8, but its About page and FAQ still say K-7, so ask. The $3,600 is a $1,800 annual fee plus a $1,800 institutional development commitment, paid through the mosque's assembly (AMCIA), and registration is $60 more. Its Quran program covers tajweed and memorization.
Don't mix it up with Almadina Language Charter Academy. That's a public charter school for students whose second or third language is English, and it isn't one of the Islamic schools in this guide.
Al-Amal Academy
Al-Amal Academy at 9 Royal Vista Dr NW was founded in 2020 and is billed as the first accredited Islamic school in northwest Calgary. It teaches K-9. Prairie Land Public School Division runs it with a Calgary nonprofit, the Pen & Paper Foundation, which sets the fees. Quran, tahfeez and Quranic Arabic are on the timetable. Admission starts with a school tour, then an interview.
MAC Islamic School
The Muslim Association of Canada opened MAC Islamic School in 2017. It's independent and describes itself as Alberta-accredited. The Bridgeland campus at 64 12 St NE teaches K-9. A second campus inside the Al-Salam Centre in Ranchlands teaches K-4 and plans to grow to Grade 6. Students get Quran, Islamic studies and Arabic every day. New students do an in-person assessment, and places go first come, first served. On 2 November 2026 it still listed a few spots in K to Grade 2.
Al-Qaim International School
Al-Qaim, at 510 77 Ave SE, isn't on the map. It teaches full-day Kindergarten to Grade 12 and says it is Alberta-accredited. Its site says its teaching is guided by the Quran and the Ahlul Bayt, which points to a Shia school. It also says it charges no tuition or registration fee, supplies the school materials, and is funded by Alvis Education Group and Alberta Education.
Lady Fatima Academy
Lady Fatima Academy, on the third floor of 1001 1 St SE, isn't on the map either. It calls itself an accredited independent Shia school, teaching the Alberta Program of Studies with religious classes in the Ithna Ashari tradition. Its About page says Junior Kindergarten to Grade 10 and its home page says Grade 11, so ask. Its site lists $220 a month (no year given) and a $300 registration fee, with an interview and an entrance exam.
Ahmadiyya Muslim School
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at runs this school at its Baitun-Nur Mosque on 54 Ave NE. Its own website lists part-time Junior and Senior Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 9, at $1,100 a year per child, listed with its 2026-27 dates (the deadline was 30 July 2026). The Jama'at's education site says up to Grade 8, so confirm the top grade.
When to apply for fall 2027
No 2027-28 dates were posted by 2 November 2026. Last year's windows:
- Al-Amal: returning families from 5 January 2026, siblings in mid-February, new students from 23 February, first come, first served.
- Calgary Islamic School: applications opened 16 March 2026, with a $50 application fee and $100 more for a Kindergarten assessment.
- Green Dome: returning students re-registered 17 March to 6 April 2026, then siblings and new families.
Weekend Islamic schools and Quran classes in Calgary
For kids in public or Catholic school, many of the mosques in Calgary run weekend or evening classes in Quran, Arabic and Islamic studies. The larger programs:
- Al-Salam Academy, MAC's weekend school at the Al-Salam Centre since 2016-17, with Arabic, Quran and Islamic studies. Its Dar al-Arqam Quran classes take ages 4 to 15, hifz included.
- NorthWest Islamic School: a Saturday school since 2001 at 9 Royal Vista Dr NW, the same street address as Al-Amal Academy. Its site lists $550 a child a year (undated).
- Al-Ansaar Islamic Centre on 63 Ave NE: Sunday Islamic studies for ages 5 to 14 ($40 a month) and evening Quran and Islamic studies classes ($80 a month). The evening classes also run at its Cornerstone branch and in Chestermere, at $95 a month.

- Out of town: the Islamic Institute of Airdrie has evening Quran and Islamic studies from age 5. Al Madinah Chestermere and the Cochrane Musallah teach Quran too.
Full-time hifz. Al-Ansaar runs a weekday tahfiz program, with Alberta schooling in partnership with Golden Hills from Grade 3. Rahmania Islamic Institute at 9052 46 St NE offers full-time hifz plus part-time and weekend classes.
Muslim daycare, preschool and homeschooling
Amana Early Learning Centre at 5440 4 St NW in Thorncliffe calls itself an Islamic daycare and offers full-day care. Hanan's Preschool at 3829 27 St NE teaches ages 3 to 6 in English and Arabic, with Quran studies, and runs before- and after-school care up to age 12. Neither is on the map, and I haven't checked their licences, so ask on your tour.
For homeschoolers, Calgary Muslim Homeschoolers has run programs, field trips and meetups since 2015 and counts about 70 homeschoolers. Bloom Islamic Academy, based in Edmonton, supports faith-centred home education across Alberta from K to Grade 12, and Al-Amal Online Academy teaches Grades 1 to 12 online.
How to choose: questions to ask
Questions worth asking on a tour:
- Accreditation. Is it a public division program or an accredited private school? Are the teachers Alberta-certified? Ask for its latest Annual Education Results Report.
- Curriculum. Is it the full Alberta Program of Studies? How did Grade 6 and 9 students do on the provincial achievement tests?
- Quran and Arabic. How many minutes a day? Is Arabic a language class or only Quran reading? In a hifz stream, how much math and science time is left?
- Transport and waitlists. Is there a bus to your neighbourhood, and what does it cost? Do siblings go first, is there an entrance test, and how long is the list for your child's grade?
- Fees. What does the fee cover? Are there payment plans, sibling discounts or financial aid?
- High school. Only the Akram Jomaa campus and Al-Qaim reach Grade 12 in person. Elsewhere, where do graduates go next?
Packing lunch? See the halal back-to-school guide. Al-Amal and MAC's Bridgeland campus also hold Friday Jumu'ah prayers. For other places to pray, see where to pray in Calgary, and the prayer times guide links each mosque's timetable.
