Read this before you drive

Every Jumu'ah time below is reported rather than guaranteed. They move with the season, most of these mosques run two sittings, and a centre with one imam can change its schedule in a week. Treat the times as a starting point and confirm with the mosque.

Two never close. Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Assembly — the Green Dome mosque in the northeast — and Fairview Southeast Mosque in the southeast are both open 24 hours, which makes them the answer for fajr before a flight and isha after a late shift.

Northeast

Most of this city's mosques are here, which is also where most of its halal food is.

  • Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre, 2624 39 Ave NE — one of Calgary's largest, and by review volume the most-reviewed mosque on this map. Two Jumu'ah sittings, reported at 1:30pm and 2:30pm. Built for big congregations, which is why it is the one people name for Eid.
  • Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Assembly (Green Dome), 4616 80 Ave NE — open 24 hours, ample parking, with the Green Dome Islamic School on site. Jumu'ah in more than one sitting, the first advertised from 2pm.
  • Al-Ansaar Islamic Centre, 3670 63 Ave NE — listed as open 24 hours, and chiefly a place to learn: classical Islamic education for children and adults.
  • Hazrat Bilal Islamic Center, 20 Saddlestone Dr — the five daily prayers, Friday prayers, youth classes and halaqahs, listed as open 24 hours. The wudu area fits one person at a time, which matters just before Jumu'ah.
  • Imam Azam Islamic Centre, 4821 Westwinds Dr NE — in the middle of the northeast's busiest commercial hub. Jumu'ah starts at 2pm, later than most, and the room fills: arrive early.
  • Abu Bakr Islamic Centre, 3030 3 Ave NE — quiet, family-friendly and easy to drive straight past. The entrance is around the side; look for unit 100 rather than for a mosque.
  • Al-Hedaya Islamic Centre, 108 Savanna Ave NE — a small musalla in one of the newest parts of the northeast, so a growing community does not drive to a larger masjid five times a day.
  • Dawat-e-Islami Canada (Faizan-e-Madina), 32 Westwinds Crescent NE — inside a commercial building with no street-facing signage. Several reviewers record driving in circles for twenty minutes; go by the unit number.
  • Alfalah Calgary Islamic Center (ACIC), 1411 33 St NE — a newer musallah inside the Action Dignity Society building, with a mezzanine for sisters that reviewers single out as unusually generous.
  • Bab-ul-Hawaij Islamic Centre, 3025 12 St NE — a Shia centre, organiser of what its community describes as the largest Ashura procession in the Calgary area, with a separate entrance and hall for ladies.
  • Masjid Bilal Da'wa Center, 4527 6A St NE — an independent masjid in Greenview: five daily prayers, a weekend madrasa, and a sisters' halaqah in English.

Downtown and the southwest

Two rooms in the core, and one of the oldest mosques in the city further west. Ask anyone for “the downtown mosque” and you may get either of two places, on opposite sides of the core.

  • Downtown Calgary Mosque (IISC), 1009 7 Ave SW — the only mosque inside the downtown core on this map, and the answer to Dhuhr in a lunch break. Two Jumu'ah sittings, 12:30 and 1:30, to move everyone through.
  • Calgary Downtown Musalla (MCC), 205 8 Ave SE — the east-side counterpart, on the mezzanine of the Arts Commons building behind Olympic Plaza, a short walk from City Hall and the Central Library. The map pin is misleading: the entrance is inside Arts Commons.
  • Calgary Islamic Centre SW Masjid (CICSW), 5615 14 Ave SW — one of the oldest mosques in Calgary, green-domed with a minaret, and the practical choice on a side of the city where most of this map's mosques are not. Two Friday sittings in summer, around 2pm and 3pm, and three Eid prayers.

Northwest

  • Al-Salam Centre, 6415 Ranchview Dr NW — a spacious Ranchlands mosque with an Islamic kindergarten and elementary school on the premises. Two Jumu'ah sittings, 1pm and 2pm; the hall holds hundreds and the car park does not.
  • Islamic Association of NW Calgary, 7750 Ranchview Dr NW — a short walk from Al-Salam, with separate facilities for men and women, Quran classes through the winter and children's programmes in Ramadan.

Southeast

South of the Bow: Fairview, Forest Lawn and the Legacy musallah, with a lot of new suburb between them

  • Fairview Southeast Mosque (IISC), 230 78 Ave SE — a former church, spacious and open around the clock. Two Jumu'ah sittings; the first khutbah is in English from about half twelve.
  • Al-Huda Musallah, 5701 17 Ave SE — volunteer-run, on the Forest Lawn halal strip, recently recarpeted and repainted, with a perfect score from the people who pray there.
  • Abu Huraira Musalla, 5147 20 Ave SE — a small room run by the Al Azhar Youth Center for the surrounding neighbourhood. Good for a daily salah; check ahead for Jumu'ah.
  • Alkawthar Community Centre, 5204 16 Ave SE — a community centre and prayer space a block off the 17 Ave strip. No hours are listed, so phone before relying on it for a particular prayer.
  • Islamic Centre Of South Calgary, 180 Legacy Main St SE — the deep-south answer, which until it opened meant driving to Fairview. Jumu'ah at 1:45pm, limited parking, and the entrance is at the back beside Pie Junkie.
  • Calgary Islamic School, Omar Bin Al-Khattab campus, 225 28 St SE — a working school with a prayer space attached, so it keeps school hours and closes at weekends.

Airdrie and Chestermere

The pattern in the list

Eleven of these are in the northeast and two are in the northwest. If you live west or south of downtown, the mosque nearest you is probably CICSW, the Islamic Centre of South Calgary, or one of the two downtown rooms — and for the hours in between, the restaurants and shops that keep a prayer space are the practical answer.
