Read this before you drive
I left Jumu'ah times out on purpose. They change with the season, and most mosques run two sittings. Check with the mosque before you go; the prayer times guide links each one's own timetable.
Two never close. Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Assembly (the Green Dome, 4616 80 Ave NE) and Fairview Southeast Mosque (230 78 Ave SE) are open 24 hours. They're the answer for fajr before a flight or isha after a late shift.
Northeast mosques in Calgary
Northeast prayer spaces at a glance, with the eleven mosques below.
- Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre, 2624 39 Ave NE: one of Calgary's largest. Two Jumu'ah sittings. It's the one people name for Eid.
- Al-Madinah Calgary Islamic Assembly (Green Dome), 4616 80 Ave NE: open 24 hours, with lots of parking and the Green Dome Islamic School on site. Jumu'ah runs in more than one sitting.
- Al-Ansaar Islamic Centre, 3670 63 Ave NE: listed as open 24 hours. Mainly a school for classical Islamic learning, for kids and adults.
- Hazrat Bilal Islamic Center, 20 Saddlestone Dr: daily and Friday prayers, youth classes and halaqahs, listed as open 24 hours. The wudu area fits one person at a time, which matters just before Jumu'ah.
- Imam Azam Islamic Centre, 4821 Westwinds Dr NE: in the busiest shopping area. It fills, so come early.
- Abu Bakr Islamic Centre, 3030 3 Ave NE: quiet and family-friendly. The entrance is around the side, at unit 100.
- Al-Hedaya Islamic Centre, 108 Savanna Ave NE: a small musalla in one of the newest parts of the northeast. In 2020 it was one of the Calgary mosques that began broadcasting the call to prayer during Ramadan.
- Dawat-e-Islami Canada (Faizan-e-Madina), 32 Westwinds Crescent NE: in a commercial building with no street sign. Go by the unit number.
- Alfalah Calgary Islamic Center (ACIC), 1411 33 St NE: a newer musallah inside the Action Dignity Society building. Reviewers say its sisters' mezzanine is unusually generous.
- Bab-ul-Hawaij Islamic Centre, 3025 12 St NE: a Shia centre. It runs what its community calls the area's largest Ashura procession, with a separate entrance and hall for ladies.
- Masjid Bilal Da'wa Center, 4527 6A St NE: an independent masjid in Greenview. Five daily prayers, a weekend madrasa, and a sisters' halaqah in English.
Downtown and the southwest
Downtown and southwest at a glance. “The downtown mosque” can mean either of two places, on opposite sides of the core. Check the address first.
- Downtown Calgary Mosque (IISC), 1009 7 Ave SW: the only actual mosque inside the downtown core. Good for Dhuhr on a lunch break. Two Jumu'ah sittings.
- Calgary Downtown Musalla (MCC), 205 8 Ave SE: the east-side option. It's on the mezzanine of Arts Commons, behind Olympic Plaza, near City Hall and the Central Library. Map pins can point to the wrong door, so go in through Arts Commons.
- Calgary Islamic Centre SW Masjid (CICSW), 5615 14 Ave SW: one of the oldest mosques in Calgary, with a green dome and a minaret. Two Friday sittings in summer, and three Eid prayers.
Northwest
- Al-Salam Centre, 6415 Ranchview Dr NW: a big Ranchlands mosque with an Islamic kindergarten and elementary school on site. Three Jumu'ah sittings. The hall holds hundreds, but the parking lot doesn't.
- Islamic Association of NW Calgary, 7750 Ranchview Dr NW: a short walk from Al-Salam. Separate spaces for men and women, winter Quran classes and kids' programs in Ramadan. It is closed for renovation for now, and its Jumu'ah has moved to the Ranchlands Community Centre.
Southeast
Southeast mosques at a glance: Fairview, Forest Lawn and Legacy, with a lot of suburb between them.
- Fairview Southeast Mosque (IISC), 230 78 Ave SE: a former church, roomy and open around the clock. Two Jumu'ah sittings, and the first khutbah is in English.
- Al-Huda Musallah, 5701 17 Ave SE: run by volunteers on the Forest Lawn halal strip. Recently recarpeted and repainted, with a perfect score from the people who pray there.
- Abu Huraira Musalla, 5147 20 Ave SE: a small room run by the Al Azhar Youth Center for the local area. Good for daily salah. Check ahead for Jumu'ah.
- Alkawthar Community Centre, 5204 16 Ave SE: a community centre and prayer space a block off the 17 Ave strip. No hours are listed, so call before counting on it.
- Islamic Centre Of South Calgary, 180 Legacy Main St SE: the deep-south option. Jumu'ah has limited parking, and the entrance is at the back beside Pie Junkie.
- Calgary Islamic School, Omar Bin Al-Khattab campus, 225 28 St SE: a working school with a prayer space. It keeps school hours and closes on weekends.
The Islamic Centre of South Calgary is also building a southeast masjid at 16555 104 St SE. Groundbreaking was on 3 February 2024. Phase 1 will hold up to 800 worshippers.
Airdrie and Chestermere
- Jamia Masjid Riyadhul Jannah, 121 2 Ave NE, Airdrie: in the old downtown, listed as open 24 hours. Sources disagree on the Jumu'ah time, so call.
- Islamic Institute of Airdrie, 505 Main St S: two Jumu'ah sittings, with its prayer times on its own website.
- Al-Madinah Chestermere Islamic Centre, 300 Merganser Dr W: a storefront masjid in Chestermere Plaza, run by the Chestermere Muslim Council, in the same plaza as Pizzorama. See halal food in Chestermere.
Finding a masjid near me: the pattern
Eleven of these are in the northeast and two are in the northwest. If you live west or south of downtown, your nearest mosque is probably CICSW, the Islamic Centre of South Calgary, or one of the two downtown rooms.
