There are 305 halal places on this map right now, and most of the time you do not want all of them. You want the ones with a prayer space, because you are out at Dhuhr. Or a grocery counter, because you need meat for tonight rather than dinner served to you. Or a patio, because it is finally warm. Scrolling 305 pins to find those is not searching — it is hoping.

So the map now filters. One tap on the row above the list narrows everything — the pins, the sidebar, the URL — to just that kind of place.

What each filter does

There are six, and each one answers a different question:

  • Restaurant — the 217 places that serve you a meal, as opposed to selling you ingredients.
  • Patio — 35 places with outdoor seating, which in Calgary is a seasonal but strongly held preference.
  • Grocery — 62 butchers, halal meat counters and South Asian, Arab and African supermarkets.
  • Clothing — 17 modest-wear and abaya shops.
  • Prayer Space — 24 places with a musalla or a room set aside to pray in.
  • Places of Worship — 13 mosques and Islamic centres.

The icons are deliberately wordless so the row fits on a phone, so hovering one on a desktop tells you what it is:

Watching it work

Tapping through them is the quickest way to see what the map actually holds. Prayer spaces cluster where people work and shop; groceries sit heavily in the northeast; patios thin out to a handful of streets.

Every filter is its own page

A filtered map is not a temporary state that disappears when you close the tab. Each one has a real address you can bookmark or send to someone:

That matters more than it sounds. "Where can we eat near Dhuhr?" in a group chat is answerable with one link rather than a screenshot and a list of names.

Stacking a cuisine on top

Underneath the filter row is a second one for cuisine — Shawarma, Pakistani, Pizza, Chinese and the rest. The two combine, and the URL follows: /restaurant/mexican/ is exactly what it looks like. Pick Prayer Space and then Pakistani and you have narrowed 305 places down to the ones that are both.

On a phone

This is mostly a phone feature, if we are honest about when it gets used — standing outside, deciding where to go next. The row sits directly above the list, and the filtered result is the whole screen.

Where the data comes from, and what that means

The amenities behind these filters come from Google's own place data, which is why the map knows about a patio at Turkish Kebab House SW or a prayer room at Flipp'n Burgers without anyone phoning to ask.

That is a strength and a limit, and it is worth being straight about it. Google is good at "has a patio" and much weaker at "has a musalla" — a prayer room is rarely something a business lists. So the Prayer Space filter is closer to a floor than a ceiling: 24 places is what we can currently stand behind, not a claim that the twenty-fifth does not exist.
