How this list was made: it is ranked by Google rating weighted against review count, taken from our own listings. That is a measure of how many people keep going back, not our personal taste — a 4.9 with 7,000 reviews is a much stronger signal than a 5.0 with 30. Where a place has a speciality worth crossing town for, we say so.
1. Jerusalem Shawarma — eight locations, and the numbers to match
No point being coy: this chain owns the top of any Calgary shawarma list. 32 Ave NE sits at 4.9 across more than 9,400 reviews, Seton at a flat 5.0 across 8,900, and Macleod Trail at 4.9 across 7,400. It is run by six brothers working from their grandfather's recipes, and the meat is halal across every Calgary location.
Two location-specific notes worth knowing. The 32 Ave NE shop is as well known for its kunafa as its wraps — people drive there for dessert. And Country Hills runs a Middle Eastern breakfast menu, which almost nobody associates with this chain. The 17 Ave SW shop is the late-night one.
2. Jaffa Shawarma — Country Hills
Jaffa is the highest-volume independent in the city: 4.9 across 7,450 reviews, in a Country Hills NE strip. Big platters, a big wrap menu, complimentary tea while you wait, and regulars who mention the free baklava as often as the food. The Beef Donair Plate is the order.
3. Deagla — Legacy
Family-owned, founded by three brothers cooking their mother's recipes, and sitting at 4.8 across nearly 1,450 reviews in the deep southeast. Deagla is the answer to "is there anything good out here" for everyone in Legacy, Walden and Auburn Bay.
4. Beirut Street Food — Fairmount Dr SE
The one on this list that tastes different from the others: Beirut Street Food grills over coal rather than gas, so the meat carries a real smokiness. Fresh-baked bread, and the fries are unusually good. 4.7 across 1,700 reviews.
5. Jimmy's A&A — 20 Ave NW
Jimmy's A&A has been the north-west's default for years — 4.7 across 3,900 reviews — and the chicken shawarma is what people name. There is a patio, which matters for about four months of the year.
6. Shawarmalicious — 17 Ave SW
Shawarmalicious does one thing: a consistently fresh classic chicken shawarma wrap. No stunt menu, 4.8 across 2,680 reviews, and a Beltline address that makes it a reliable walk from most of downtown.
7. Damascus — College Lane Plaza, Beltline
Officially Damascus Fine Mediterranean Foods, and one of the busiest halal counters in the Beltline by review volume. Damascus is a counter-serve room where the beef donair platter and the chicken shawarma combo are the two most-ordered things on the board.
8. Arabi Shawarma & Grill — Midpark SE
4.9 across 870 reviews. What sets Arabi apart is that the salads are a genuine part of the menu rather than a garnish, so it is a better sit-down meal than most shawarma counters manage. Baklava for dessert.
9. Shawarma Barlow — Meridian Rd NE
Shawarma Barlow is on the list for the donair poutine as much as the platters — Middle Eastern meat on Canadian fries, and the thing that makes this shop worth a detour rather than a stop.
10. Shawarma Palace — four locations, best in the south
Family-owned and in Calgary since 2009. The 17 Ave SE flagship is the busiest at 3,000 reviews, but the newer Seton (5.0) and Walden (4.8) shops score higher. A single platter comfortably feeds two, which makes it the value pick on this list.
Four more that nearly made it
Urban St. Donair on 4 St NW for saucy chicken shawarma. Aleppo Shawarma and Donair on Centre St N, Syrian and run by owners who know their regulars by name. Zaitoona in Symons Valley, which hands out free baklava. And King of Shawarma on 13 St SW for the green chili sauce — ask for it if it does not arrive by default — and for being open when almost nothing else is.
The one nobody thinks of
Basha Foods is a halal grocery store, but the prepared-food counter at the back makes shawarma from the same meat sold at its butcher counter. Worth a look on a grocery run, and a useful trick if you are already buying meat for the week.
