The 32 Ave NE shop is as famous for its kunafa as its wraps, and many people skip a closer branch for it. It does takeout, delivery and dine-in, and serves breakfast. Country Hills has a Middle Eastern breakfast menu. The downtown branch on 17 Ave SW is the one for a stop after a night out.
2. Jaffa Shawarma - Country Hills
Jaffa Shawarma is a busy independent in a Country Hills NE strip, rated 4.9. It does takeout, delivery and dine-in, serves breakfast, and is good for kids. Expect big platters, lots of wraps and free tea while you wait. Regulars mention the free baklava as often as the food. The Beef Donair Plate is the order.
3. Deagla - Legacy
Family-run, rated 4.8, and one of the southernmost halal kitchens in Calgary. Deagla serves wraps and plates with garlic sauce. The tzatziki za'atar fries make a tasty side.
4. Beirut Street Food - Fairmount Dr SE
Beirut Street Food grills over coal, not gas, so the meat has a real smokiness. The bread is fresh-baked, and the fries are crisp and well seasoned. Rated 4.7.
5. Jimmy's A&A - 20 Ave NW
Jimmy's A&A has been the northwest's default for years, rated 4.7. The chicken shawarma is what people name. There's a patio, which matters about four months a year.
6. Shawarmalicious - 17 Ave SW
Shawarmalicious does one thing well: a fresh, classic chicken shawarma wrap, every time. Rated 4.8, it's in the Beltline, an easy walk from downtown. It serves breakfast and lunch, does takeout and delivery, and has vegetarian options.
7. Damascus - College Lane Plaza, Beltline
Damascus Fine Mediterranean Foods is a halal counter-serve shop in the Beltline. The beef donair platter and the chicken shawarma combo are the two most-ordered things on the board.
8. Arabi Shawarma & Grill - Midpark SE
Rated 4.8. At Arabi, the salads are a real part of the menu, not a garnish. So it suits a sit-down meal. Baklava for dessert.
9. Shawarma Barlow - Meridian Rd NE
Shawarma Barlow makes the cut for its donair poutine as much as its platters. Middle Eastern meat on Canadian fries makes it worth a detour.
10. Shawarma Palace - several locations, best in the south
Family-owned and in Calgary since 2009. The newer Seton shop (4.9) scores higher than the 17 Ave SE shop. One platter easily feeds two, so it's the value pick.
Four more that nearly made it
Urban St. Donair on 4 St NW, for its beef donair with the sweet sauce. Aleppo Shawarma on Centre St N is Syrian, and the owners check in with returning customers. It has a patio and is good for kids, so it's my outdoor-seating pick. Zaitoona in Symons Valley, where staff often bring out baklava and tea. And King of Shawarma on 13 St SW, for the green chili sauce. For the far northwest, Baladi Shawarma at 65 Sage Hill Plaza NW does takeout, delivery and dine-in, and is good for kids.
The one nobody thinks of
Basha Foods is a halal grocery store. But the prepared-food counter at the back makes shawarma from the same meat sold at its butcher counter. Handy if you're already buying meat for the week.
