Still, the question keeps coming up. KFC isn't "never halal anywhere," and that gap is what keeps the rumour going.
Where the KFC halal confusion comes from
In May 2024, KFC Canada switched its Ontario stores to halal-certified chicken. It came from a Canadian supplier's certified line, and those stores dropped pork. A few Ontario stores were left out, and so were co-branded outlets. It was widely reported, and some unhappy customers even started a petition.
That coverage also mentioned a plan to bring halal chicken to KFC across Canada. That's where the rumour starts. People saw a 2024 headline about KFC going halal and fairly assumed it meant the whole country.
So, is KFC halal in Alberta? As of 2026, no. The national rollout never became a published halal policy, and Alberta stores aren't part of any confirmed program.
So what should you do?
There's no certificate here to point to. "The chain went halal in Ontario" is not a certificate for a Calgary store.
If you hear a local store has changed, ask for one thing: a current certificate from a recognised certifier, on display at that store. A staff member saying "I think it's halal now" doesn't count. Neither does a news story about another province.
The bigger lesson: chains go store by store
Chipotle is the simpler version of this question. Not one Canadian store is certified, so there's no branch to check.
This goes well beyond KFC. In Canada, halal status at a chain is often set franchise by franchise. The same brand can be certified in one city and not the next.
Calgary has clear examples right now:
- Mary Brown's in Shepard and Quarry Park run fully halal menus. A customer was shown a certificate at the West Springs store. That's only a handful of Calgary stores; the others aren't.
- Dave's Hot Chicken at East Hills sources halal chicken for the local community. The community says the Macleod Trail and Sarcee Trail stores are halal too.
- Popeyes on 17 Ave SW is a bit different. The chain's Canadian chicken is IFANCA-certified, and the community has confirmed this store. Still, check the certificate on your first visit, since it can vary by franchise.
Chains aren't left out. A chain store gets listed once that exact store is verified. KFC in Calgary hasn't met that bar.

Good news: fried chicken is the best-covered part of Calgary's halal food scene.
- Cluck N Cleaver is a Calgary-based halal chain built around the fried chicken sandwich.
- Seoul Fried Chicken on 4 St SW in Mission is the older of the chain's two Calgary branches. The chain made its Calgary and Edmonton stores fully halal. Mission does Korean-style double-fried chicken.
- Pekko in Kensington does fried and grilled chicken, and all the food is certified halal. Flavours include Korean fried, Nashville hot and Jamaican jerk.
- Cluck Clucks in Sage Hill does halal chicken and waffles. Halal chicken is the kitchen's own policy, with no outside certificate.
- Prefer charcoal to a fryer? Darwin's Charcoal BBQ Chicken is tied for the top halal chicken rating I found, at 4.8. It's the only charcoal specialist of the three at that score.

For fried chicken, Calgary's halal options are no compromise. Five picks, with ratings:
- Popeyes on 17 Ave SW: 4.5. Its Canadian chicken is IFANCA-certified halal.
- Barcelos, Aviation Road: 4.5. It's flame-grilled, not fried.
