The map knows what 258 of its 305 halal places actually serve. Not "restaurant" — shawarma, karahi, pho, birria. There is now a row of cuisines above the map, and tapping one narrows everything to it.

What Calgary's halal scene actually looks like

Filtering one cuisine at a time turns out to be the clearest picture anyone has of what this city has and has not got. The counts are lopsided in ways worth knowing before you go looking:

  • Shawarma, 70 places. Nothing else is close. Shawarma, donair and the Lebanese-Syrian-Yemeni end of the map together make up nearly a quarter of everything here.
  • Indian 31, Pakistani 21, Afghan 11. The South and Central Asian kitchens are the second pillar, heavily weighted to the northeast.
  • Chicken 27, Butcher 22, Pizza 12. Fried chicken counters and halal butchers are quietly everywhere.
  • Turkish 11, Breakfast 10, Vegetarian 10, Cafe 9, BBQ 8, Burgers 8. The comfortable middle.
  • Chinese 7, Bakery 7, Desserts 5, Persian 4. Thinner than you would expect for a city this size.
  • Italian 2, Mexican 2, Thai 2, African 2, Japanese 2 — and exactly one each of Korean, Vietnamese and Seafood.

That last line is the interesting one. If you want halal Korean in Calgary you are going to Gogi Korean Kitchen. Halal pho means Pho Daddy. Halal sushi means Arashi Sushi. These are not shortlists, they are the list — which is exactly the kind of thing a map should be able to tell you in one tap and never could before.

Stacking a cuisine on an amenity

The cuisine row sits under the amenity filters, and the two combine. Restaurant plus Pizza gives you sit-down halal pizza and drops the grocery freezers:

Each combination is a real address. /cuisine/shawarma/ on its own; /restaurant/pizza/ when you want both. Bookmarkable, sendable, and the same page every time.

One at a time, on purpose

You can only have one cuisine on at once, and that is a decision rather than an omission. Two at a time reads as though it should give you more places and does the opposite: almost nowhere is both Thai and Afghan, so the honest result of most pairs is an empty map. Tapping a second cuisine switches to it instead.

Where the tags come from

Nobody typed 258 of these by hand. They are derived from Google's own place types — shawarma_restaurant, pakistani_restaurant, pizza_restaurant — which is the only way a list this size stays honest as it grows. A name is a bad source: "Calgary Donair & Halal Pizza" is two cuisines, and "Orchard Restaurant" is Mediterranean and tells you nothing.

Where Google says nothing useful, the name gets a turn — but only for words that mean one thing. Taqueria El Chefe is filed by Google as a plain takeaway with no cuisine at all; "taqueria" is what puts it under Mexican. "Kebab" and "grill" get no such vote, because they belong to four cuisines each.

Forty-seven places carry no cuisine tag at all, and they are still on the map — they just do not appear under any of the 28. Most are genuinely hard to classify from the outside: a place called "Miraj Restaurant" or "Go-Grill" gives neither Google nor us anything to go on. If one of them is yours, or you know what it should be filed under, tell us.

Groceries and butchers are worth a note too. Halal meat counters are a category rather than a cuisine, so they live on the Grocery filter with the rest of the amenities — the cuisine row is about what is cooked, not where the ingredients come from.
