Halal Buffets in Calgary: Every One We Know, and What's Halal on Each

Calgary has around a dozen halal buffets. The biggest is Hitchki in Cornerstone, with about 150 dishes at lunch and dinner every day. For a weekday lunch, Taj Mahal on Macleod Trail (open since 1973) is the old standby.

On weekends, the halal brunch buffets take over: Bangladeshi at Miraj, Turkish at Bereket Kebab House, and Arabic breakfast at Jerusalem Shawarma Seton. A few are only partly halal.

The big Indian buffets

Hitchki The Grand Indian Buffet on Cornerstone Blvd NE calls itself the city's largest Indian buffet. Reviewers count about 150 dishes, live counters, and a dessert bar with soft serve and Dole Whip. First-timers sometimes get a walk-through of the line.

It's open for lunch and dinner daily and sits at 4.7 on Google. Google puts the price at $30–40, and some find the curries mild for that.

So, is Hitchki halal? The community halal map lists it as fully halal, on the staff's word. Its own website doesn't spell it out, and the bar serves alcohol. Ask at the host stand if you need to be sure.

Taj Mahal Restaurant at 4816 Macleod Trail SW has been open since 1973. The Wednesday dinner buffet is about $25 a person, kids 4–12 are $15, and under-fours eat free.

The meat is halal by long-standing house policy, with no certifier named. The room is licensed. Parking is out back, off the alley. The line rarely changes: beef curry, butter chicken, tandoori chicken and fish pakora, then gulab jamun, jalebi and kheer.

India Paradise on 27 St NE is the "Paradise buffet" people ask about. It's a South and North Indian kitchen with a 4.8 on Google. Its website announces a "Grand Buffet" but doesn't list days. One reviewer driving through from Edmonton paid $19 for lunch and called it a surprise. Meat is halal by the restaurant's own policy, with no certifier listed, and it serves alcohol.

Dosa Garden in Sage Hill Plaza NW runs a buffet once a week: poori, idli, curries and tandoori, plus a dosa fest every Wednesday. The community halal map lists it as fully halal. Ask which day the buffet is on.

If you're searching "halal lunch near me" from downtown, try Tandoori Grill Indo-Chinese on 4 Ave SW. It has a lunch buffet of tandoori and Hakka-style dishes. Its halal status rests on reviewers saying all the chicken and meat is halal, so confirm on your first visit. Staff have seated latecomers after buffet hours without rushing them.

Halal brunch Calgary: the weekend buffets

Looking for halal brunch near me? Most of these run Saturday and Sunday.

Miraj on Westwinds Dr NE is 100% halal and runs a weekend brunch buffet. It's a Bangladeshi breakfast, not an Indian one: khichuri, puri and paratha, egg bhurji, chana, beef and chicken curry, peyaju, and suji halwa to finish. It holds a 4.6 on Google, and one visitor from BC called its cha the best they'd had in Canada.

Utsav Sweets and Restaurant is in the same plaza. One reviewer's Sunday buffet there had halwa puri, chicken and beef curry, paratha, omelettes and daal, with hot tea after. Utsav calls its food halal on its own website and holds a 4.8. Save room for the sweets counter: roshmalai, mishti and doi.

Jerusalem Shawarma Seton has a breakfast buffet on Saturdays and Sundays, according to reviewers. Staff describe it as the chain's biggest room in the city. The meat is halal at every branch of the chain. Expect shakshouka, falafel, sambosa, fruit and a long dessert table, with free tea when you sit down. It holds a straight 5.0 on Google.

Bereket Kebab House on 37 St SW in Killarney puts out a Turkish breakfast open buffet. Think cheeses, olives, jams, Turkish salami and sausage, meze, eggs, pastries, and tea and coffee. It's $29.99 for adults, $19.99 for kids, and free for under-sixes.

It's listed as halal, in line with standard Turkish practice. But the restaurant's own site and menu never say halal, or what the salami, sausage and sucuk are made of. Ask before you fill a plate.

Pak Foods on 42 St NE is a fully halal Pakistani grocery with a restaurant attached. One reviewer had halwa puri there on a weekend morning. A recent reviewer also found a breakfast buffet at Turkish Kebab House SW on Macleod Trail, where the meat comes from halal suppliers. Its old 17 Ave SE room has closed.

Buffets where only part of it is halal

These kitchens either serve halal and non-halal meat side by side, or make no halal claim of their own. On a buffet, the trays and spoons sit side by side, so it's harder to stay careful.

• Cinnamon Indian Cuisine & Bar, 23 St NE: a lunch buffet near the airport hotels. Only some dishes are halal, so ask which. No pork on the menu, and it's licensed.
• Calgary Momo House NW, Crowfoot: an all-you-can-eat menu. Go for the steamed and tandoori momos and the chatpate. Tell staff you want halal and they'll steer you. No pork, alcohol served.
• SASA Cafe, 8 Ave SE: a Sunday buffet in a downtown dessert cafe. It's listed as halal, but the kitchen makes no halal claim, and cocktails may be served. Ask at the counter.

Fahad Restaurant & Banquet Hall in Falconridge also comes up. It's halal and runs a buffet, but one reviewer this year found the trays close to cold. The BBQ platter is the safer order there.

All-you-can-eat without a steam table

Keep an eye on Lutador in Kensington. It's built for rodizio: all-you-can-eat churrasco carved at your table. It opened in late summer 2026 on a shorter tasting menu, with full rodizio promised later, so ask when you book. It's halal on local confirmation, no certifier published yet. The bar serves no alcohol.

Golden Dragon Hot Pot in Brentwood isn't all-you-can-eat (you pay by the dish), but it's the halal hot pot, with halal-certified beef and lamb. A reviewer notes regular meat alongside the halal (no pork), so say halal when you order.

Out of town: Banff, Canmore, Cochrane

Zyka on Banff Avenue is a main halal option in Banff, an upscale kitchen cooking South and North Indian dishes. Indian Authentic Cuisine in Canmore runs a buffet alongside its menu. Mehtab in Cochrane has a lunch buffet with hot naan brought fresh to the table. Both serve some halal dishes only, so ask which.

Ramadan: when the buffets multiply

Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 February. That month, restaurants that never run a buffet put on iftar spreads. Last Ramadan that included Kabul Restaurant in Forest Lawn at $24.99 a head, Banu Kabob at $19.99, and House of Mandi in Rundle, plus Miraj and Utsav. 2027 prices aren't set yet.
