Which Fast Food Chains Are Halal in Calgary? The 2026 List

Is Wendy's halal? Is Wingstop? Shake Shack? Dave's? I kept getting the same question with a different brand in it. So I went through every chain with a Calgary presence, gave each a one-line verdict, and linked the full reasoning where I've written it up.

If you've ever typed "halal food near me" next to a drive-through, this is for you. Verdicts are as of September 2026. Chains change, and so will the answers.

How each verdict is decided

A chain's halal status rests on one of four things:

• a named certifier (Popeyes)
• the company's own account (Wingstop, Shake Shack)
• a per-store decision by a franchisee (Mary Brown's, Pizza 73)
• community reporting with no published claim behind it

The first two hold from store to store. The last two don't, so trust the store you're standing in. The thirty-second check is further down.

Yes: halal fast food Calgary chains

Each line says what the answer rests on.

• Popeyes - yes. The Canadian chicken supply is IFANCA-certified chain-wide. There are nine stores in Calgary and Airdrie, from the Beltline to Aviation Blvd by the airport. Here's the one catch.

• Wingstop - yes, by the company's own account, at Deerfoot Meadows and its Beltline delivery kitchen.
• Shake Shack - yes. Halal beef and chicken at both Chinook Centre and Macleod Trail, on the company's own account. There are two caveats.

• Dave's Hot Chicken - yes at East Hills, which the community has checked. The Macleod Trail and Sarcee Trail stores are community-sourced as halal too, so ask at the counter. It's a per-store fact, not a chain one.
• Osmow's - yes. The chain sources halal meat as brand policy. There are ten stores: eight in Calgary, from 17 Ave SE to Kensington, plus Airdrie and Okotoks.
• Tahini's - yes, fully halal at all five stores, Cornerstone and Mahogany included.
• Shawarma Palace, Jerusalem Shawarma, Villa Madina, Pita Basket, Cedars Deli - yes. These shawarma chains are halal by design. All are Calgary-born except Villa Madina, which came west from Ontario. Between them, thirty Calgary stores are listed. How the two big ones compare.
• Barcelos - yes, halal flame-grilled chicken at Sage Hill and Aviation. It's the peri-peri answer, since Nando's isn't.
• Dickey's Barbecue Pit - yes at both stores, 11 Ave SW in the Beltline and 7 Ave SW downtown. It's about the only halal smoked brisket in the city.
• iyycburg - yes. Calgary-born and fully halal at all five stores, and the owners say so in the Facebook groups. Boardwalk Burgers is the other halal burger chain, community-sourced as halal at its three stores.
• Holy Shakes, D Spot, Rollz, Cluck Clucks - yes. Halal-throughout dessert and chicken chains: two Holy Shakes, five D Spots, two Rollz and one Cluck Clucks.

It depends: the per-store chains

• Mary Brown's - some stores. There's no chain-wide programme; franchisees decide. Two stores are verified (Shepard and Quarry Park). A third from the same operator, Creekside, announced halal at opening. Eight more are listed as halal by the community halal map. Which stores, and how to check.
• Pizza 73 - yes-ish. A real halal menu with halal pepperoni at participating stores, but shared kitchens and no certificate. Order it right and it works. How it actually works.
• Canadian Pizza Unlimited - halal meat toppings across thirteen stores, from 52 Ave NW to Chestermere. That rests on the chain's stated practice, not a certificate. The best-rated is the 136 Ave NW store in Sage Hill, with BigGuy's Fried Chicken.
• Chicken on the Way - halal chicken at six stores. One footnote from the community halal map: at Crowfoot, the gravy is not halal. Same at Cluck N Cleaver: halal chicken, non-halal gravy.
• Church's Texas Chicken - the Sage Hill store is listed as fully halal by the community halal map. Corporate says the chain isn't halal and stores decide. So treat the other Calgary Church's as unconfirmed until someone shows a certificate.
• Wendy's - contested. Some Calgary stores claim halal chicken. A named certifier says it certifies no Wendy's, and corporate is silent. It's one of the faster-rising searches in Google Trends. The honest state of it.
• Smash Street Burger, Freshii - halal options, not halal kitchens. Smash Street's two stores have offered a halal beef patty on a separate grill; confirm it after the rebrand. Freshii Sundance has halal chicken and steak only. Ask which items.
• Seniore's Pizza - partial. It came up often in the Calgary groups this summer. Only the beef donair and beef pepperoni are reported halal, from a customer who phoned and asked. The chicken and other beef toppings are not, so I don't count it.
• barBurrito, Mucho Burrito - store by store. Some franchises advertise halal chicken in their own posts. The community halal map pins eleven barBurritos with no note, but neither national site says a word, so I haven't counted any. Ask which items, and for the certificate.
• Gong Cha - a drinks chain, flagged by the community as halal-friendly rather than certified. Ten stores.

No: chains that are not halal in Calgary

• McDonald's - no, anywhere in Canada. Why, and what the fish sandwich doesn't solve.
• KFC - no in Calgary. The halal programme is real but Ontario-only. Where the rumour comes from.
• A&W - no, at every location. The whole answer.
• Tim Hortons - the meat, no; the coffee, yes.
• Chick-fil-A - no. The company's own FAQ says no menu item meets halal standards.
• Papa John's - no, and the pepperoni is pork.
• Chipotle - no, at all seven Calgary branches.
• Subway - no store is verifiably halal. Claims that say otherwise never name one.
• Nando's - no in Alberta, yes in Ontario. The province decides.
• Harvey's - no. Its own FAQ says beef and chicken are "not Halal certified at this time," at every Canadian location.
• Jollibee, Dairy Queen, Edo Japan, Carl's Jr., Boston Pizza, Quesada - I found no certificate or named supplier for any of them in Calgary. A few show up on community lists with no note: Quesada on the community halal map, Boston Pizza's Saddletowne and Dalhousie stores on the community halal map and on Yelp, and a Carl's Jr. on 32 Ave NE on Yelp. That's a lead, not an answer. Until a store shows a certificate or named supplier, treat it as not halal.
• The Halal Guys - closed. The Calgary store at 923 17 Ave SW opened in July 2021 and closed in early 2024. The address is now Jerusalem Shawarma Downtown. For a similar platter, try Osmow's Chicken on the Rocks or a Tahini's bowl.

The thirty-second check at any store

Ask three questions, in order.

• Can I see the halal certificate? A store that has one won't mind. Look at the date.
• Which items does it cover? Often chicken only, which means the beef burger beside it isn't halal.
• Is the fryer shared? That decides whether halal chicken and bacon met in the same oil.

A quick, clear answer tells you something. So does a shrug. If you get one, here's what's safe to order with no halal option.

The short version

Chicken chains carry the list: Popeyes, Wingstop, Dave's, Church's Sage Hill, and Mary Brown's at the right store. Shake Shack, iyycburg and Boardwalk are the burger exceptions. The shawarma chains and Calgary's own halal mini-chains are halal by design. McDonald's, KFC, A&W, Tim Hortons, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Nando's and Harvey's are no. For everything else, it's a certificate at the counter or nothing.
