Most of the questions we have answered this year have been the same question with a different brand in it: is Wendy's halal, is Wingstop halal, is Shake Shack, is Dave's. "Which fast food chains are halal" is the version people ask when they stop asking one chain at a time. This is that page — every chain with a Calgary presence, a one-line verdict, and a link to the full reasoning where we have written it. Verdicts are as of August 2026; chains change, and the list will too.

The question behind the question is always the same: whose word is the claim resting on?

How to read this list

A chain's halal status rests on one of four things, and the list below says which: a named certifier (Popeyes); the company's own account (Wingstop, Shake Shack); a per-store decision by a franchisee (Mary Brown's, Pizza 73); or community reporting with no published claim behind it. The first two travel from store to store. The last two do not, which is why the only thing worth trusting is the store you are standing in. The thirty-second check is below.

Yes: the chains that run halal across Calgary

  • Popeyes — yes. The Canadian chicken supply is IFANCA-certified chain-wide, about as strong an answer as any national chain in this country gives; nine Calgary and Airdrie stores are on the map, from the Beltline to Aviation Blvd by the airport. The asterisk is in the Popeyes article.
  • Wingstop — yes, by the company's own account, at Deerfoot Meadows and its Beltline delivery kitchen. Full answer.
  • Shake Shack — yes: halal beef and chicken at both Chinook Centre and Macleod Trail, with two caveats in the Shake Shack article.
  • Dave's Hot Chicken — yes at East Hills, which the community has checked; the Macleod Trail store is listed as fully halal by the community map, so ask at the counter there. It is a per-location fact, not a chain one. Full answer.
  • Osmow's — yes; the chain sources halal meat as brand policy, and ten stores are on the map — eight in Calgary, from 17 Ave SE to the 5am Kensington store, plus Airdrie and Okotoks.
  • Tahini's — yes, fully halal, at all five stores on the map, Cornerstone included; Mahogany is the late one, to 4am at weekends.
  • Shawarma Palace, Jerusalem Shawarma, Villa Madina, Pita Basket, Cedars Deli — yes. The shawarma chains — Calgary-born, except Villa Madina, which came west from Ontario — are halal by construction; between them they account for thirty pins on this map. The shawarma guide ranks the two big ones.
  • Barcelos — yes, halal flame-grilled chicken at Sage Hill and Aviation; the peri-peri answer while Nando's is not one.
  • Dickey's Barbecue Pit — yes at both Dickey's on the map, 11 Ave SW in the Beltline and 7 Ave SW downtown; about the only halal smoked brisket in the city.
  • iyycburg — yes; Calgary-born, fully halal at all five stores, and the owners say so in the Facebook groups. Boardwalk Burgers is the other halal burger chain on the map, community-sourced as halal at its three stores.
  • Holy Shakes, D Spot, Rollz, Cluck Clucks — yes; halal-throughout dessert and chicken chains with Calgary branches (two Holy Shakes, five D Spots, two Rollz, one Cluck Clucks).

The chicken chains carry the list — beef burgers are where most national brands fall out

It depends: the per-store chains

  • Mary Brown's — some stores. There is no chain-wide programme; franchisees decide. Two stores are verified (Shepard and Quarry Park), a third from the same operator (Creekside) was announced as halal at opening, and eight more are listed as halal by the community map, store by store, with that note on each page. Which ones, and how to check.
  • Pizza 73 — yes-ish. A real halal menu with halal pepperoni at the participating stores on the map, shared kitchens, and no certificate; order it right and it works. How it actually works.
  • Canadian Pizza Unlimited — halal meat toppings across the thirteen stores on the map, from 52 Ave NW to Chestermere, on the chain's stated practice rather than a certificate. The 136 Ave NW store in Sage Hill, with BigGuy's Fried Chicken, is the best-rated by a distance.
  • Chicken on the Way — halal chicken at the six stores on the map, with one footnote the community map spells out: at the Crowfoot store the gravy is not halal. The same footnote applies at Cluck N Cleaver, where the chicken is halal and the gravy is not.
  • Church's Texas Chicken — the Sage Hill store is listed as fully halal by the community map and is on ours; the chain's corporate line is that it is not halal and individual stores decide, so treat the other Calgary Church's as unconfirmed — off the map until somebody shows us a certificate.
  • Wendy's — contested. Some Calgary stores claim halal chicken, a named certifier says it certifies no Wendy's, and corporate is silent. The honest state of it.
  • Smash Street Burger, Freshii — halal options rather than halal kitchens: Smash Street's two stores have offered a halal beef patty on a separate grill, worth confirming after the rebrand, and Freshii Sundance runs halal chicken and steak only. Ask which items.
  • Seniore's Pizza — partial, and a question that has come up repeatedly in the Calgary groups this summer. Only the beef donair and beef pepperoni are halal, per a post in the Calgary's Halal Restaurants Facebook group by someone who phoned and asked; the chicken and the other beef toppings are not. It is not on our map for that reason.
  • barBurrito, Mucho Burrito — store by store. Individual franchises advertise halal chicken in their own posts and the Halal Map YYC pins eleven barBurritos with no note beside them, but neither national site says a word; none is on our map. Ask which items, and for the certificate.
  • Gong Cha — a drinks chain, community-flagged as halal-friendly rather than certified; ten stores on the map.

No: the chains that are not halal in Calgary

  • McDonald's — no, anywhere in Canada. Why, and what the fish sandwich does not solve.
  • KFC — no in Calgary; the halal programme is real but Ontario-only. Where the rumour comes from.
  • A&W — no, at every location. The whole answer.
  • Tim Hortons — the meat, no; the coffee, yes. The fine print.
  • Chick-fil-A — no; the company's own FAQ says no menu item meets halal standards. Full answer.
  • Papa John's — no, and the pepperoni is pork. Full answer.
  • Chipotle — no, at all seven Calgary branches. The grey area.
  • Subway — no store is verifiably halal; the pages that say otherwise never name one. How to check one in thirty seconds.
  • Nando's — no in Alberta, yes in Ontario; the province decides. Why.
  • Jollibee, Dairy Queen, Edo Japan, Carl's Jr., Boston Pizza, Quesada — none is on our map, and we have found no certificate or named supplier for any of them in Calgary. A few turn up on community lists with no note beside them (Quesada on the Halal Map YYC, Boston Pizza's Saddletowne and Dalhousie stores on Zabihah and Yelp, a Carl's Jr. on 32 Ave NE on Yelp); that is a lead to check at the counter, not an answer. Until a store shows a certificate or a named supplier, treat them as not halal.
  • The Halal Guys — closed. The name still trends in Alberta searches, but the Calgary store at 923 17 Ave SW, open from July 2021, closed in early 2024, and the address is now Jerusalem Shawarma Downtown. For a platter in the same spirit, Osmow's Chicken on the Rocks or a Tahini's bowl is the nearest thing.

Fried chicken on a chequered plate: the format where the halal chains are strongest

The thirty-second check at any store

Three questions, in order. Can I see the halal certificate? At a store that has one, this is a normal request and nobody minds; look at the date. Which items does it cover? Chicken only is the usual answer at the chains that say yes, which means the beef burger beside it is not. Is the fryer shared? That decides whether halal chicken and conventional bacon met in the same oil. A counter that answers all three without hesitation is telling you something; so is one that does not. If the answer is a shrug, our guide to eating when there is no halal option covers what is safe to order anyway.

The short version

Chicken chains carry the list: Popeyes, Wingstop, Dave's, Church's Sage Hill, Mary Brown's at the right store. Shake Shack, iyycburg and Boardwalk are the burger exceptions. The shawarma chains and Calgary's own halal mini-chains are halal by design. McDonald's, KFC, A&W, Tim Hortons, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle and Nando's are no. Everything else is a certificate at the counter or nothing.

Find them on the map

Every halal store in the Yes and It-depends lists above is on the live map with hours and directions. The Fast Food filter lists the chains and counters, and the Chicken filter is where most of the halal ones live.

Common questions

Which fast food chains are halal in Calgary?

Popeyes (its Canadian chicken supply is IFANCA-certified chain-wide), Wingstop and Shake Shack (by the companies' own account), Dave's Hot Chicken, Osmow's, Tahini's, Barcelos, Dickey's, iyycburg, and the shawarma chains — Shawarma Palace, Jerusalem Shawarma, Villa Madina, Pita Basket. Mary Brown's and Pizza 73 are halal at some stores only.

Is McDonald's, KFC or A&W halal in Calgary?

No, in Calgary. McDonald's and A&W serve no halal-certified meat anywhere in Canada. KFC's halal programme is real but Ontario-only, so at every Calgary KFC the answer is no. Tim Hortons and Chick-fil-A are the same: no.

Is The Halal Guys still open in Calgary?

No. The store at 923 17 Ave SW opened in July 2021 and closed in early 2024; the address is now Jerusalem Shawarma Downtown. The name still shows up in Alberta search trends, which is why it is on this list.

Is Seniore's Pizza halal?

Partly. According to a post in the Calgary's Halal Restaurants Facebook group by a customer who phoned and asked, only the beef donair and beef pepperoni are halal; the chicken and the other beef toppings are not. It is not on our map for that reason — the pizza guide lists the kitchens that are halal throughout.

How do I check whether a specific fast food store is halal?

Ask to see the certificate and check its date, ask which items it covers (often chicken only), and ask whether the fryer is shared. A store that has the answers will give them without hesitation.
