Reviews of Cranston Residents Association at Century Hall
from GoogleI did not get a response to my email to the general manager, so I figured I would post here as well. This was my email: “I am writing to provide feedback about my rental experience at the Cranston Community Centre today. Unfortunately, while the event itself was wonderful, our experience with the facility left us feeling unwelcome and disappointed. I first want to recognize the gentleman who gave us a walkthrough of the space earlier in the day. I had stopped by to make sure I knew where we could safely plug in our bouncy castle, and he was absolutely fantastic. He was friendly, helpful, and made me feel confident that everything was ready for our party. Unfortunately, our experience changed once we arrived for our rental. We checked in around 12:27 p.m. and simply asked the front desk if we could borrow a small piece of tape to hang a birthday banner on the mirror. The maintenance staff member followed us into the gym to tell us we could not tape anything to the mirror, despite there being visible tape residue and pieces of tape already on it. While I understand there may be policies around decorations, the interaction felt unnecessary and set an uncomfortable tone from the beginning. Throughout our rental, the same maintenance staff member repeatedly entered the gym. At one point I even asked him what he was looking for because he kept coming in, and he replied, “Nothing.” It made us feel as though we were being monitored rather than trusted to enjoy the space we had rented. What was most disappointing was that at approximately 4:25 p.m., while we still had five minutes remaining in our gym rental, he entered with another staff member and began cleaning up. Later, at approximately 4:40 p.m., while we were still using the Riverside Room and our rental continued until 5:00 p.m., he came into the room and began sorting bottles while our guests were still visiting. It was uncomfortable enough that our friends left around 4:45 p.m., and we cleaned up and left early ourselves. We had paid for two consecutive rental time slots, so there was no group waiting to come in and no need to begin cleaning before our rental had ended. Instead of feeling welcomed, we felt watched throughout the afternoon and rushed out before our booked time was over. My family has lived in Cranston for 13 years, and this is only the second time we have rented the community centre. We rarely use the facilities, and I had hoped this would be a positive experience for our child’s birthday. Unfortunately, it was not. I cannot honestly say we would choose to rent the facility again based on how we were treated today. I wanted to bring this experience to your attention because I hope future renters are able to enjoy the space they have paid for without feeling uncomfortable or as though they are being hurried out before their rental has ended. Thank you for taking the time to read my feedback.”
I have many complaints about this establishment. First, their closing time is listed as 9pm on their website, however, each time I have been they kicked us out at 8:45 because “[the workers] work until 9:00”. Any respectable establishment allows their guests to stay until closing time, and has their employees work later to complete closing duties. Second, the closures of the hockey rink during prime time in the winter due to “events” is abismal. I audibly gasped when I saw I was unable to play hockey on the HOCKEY RINK on a Friday or Saturday night due to skating events, however, when I drove by during said “events” time, there was absolutely no one using the ice. It is absolutely ridiculous that we are paying for amenities we have very limited access to. I am very disappointed in the Cranston community. The shared space that everyone pays for should be accessible for everyone during their opening hours.
