White Elephant Thai Cuisine Calgary
Reviews of White Elephant Thai Cuisine Calgary
from GoogleOne of the gems in Calgary for eating out, very reasonable prices. We are never disappointed ordering any food items from the menu. All the foods are freshly prepared. The only disappointment is this restaurant closes very soon and is always busy. Ordered chicken satay, Tom Kam soup, yellow curry, fresh rolls and Basil stir fry vegetables with egg plant. Portion sizes are big enough for 2-3 people. Their food can be eaten in summer winter all year around
White Elephant Thai Cuisine is the true definition of “don’t judge a book by its cover.” The entrance is tucked away at the back with a sign, and from the outside it looks pretty ordinary. But once you step inside, it’s lively, colorful, and filled with Thai decor that gives the place a fun, welcoming atmosphere. The papaya salad was refreshing, flavorful, and came in a generous portion. The shrimp tom yum was comforting, tangy, and really hit the spot. I also enjoyed the eggplant Thai basil, which was tasty and well-seasoned. To finish, the Thai longan iced tea was a nice sweet drink to wash everything down. Service was friendly, and the portions were large for the price. While it may not be the best Thai food I’ve ever had, it was still very good overall and worth checking out. I’d definitely return.
We were up from Ontario and wanted to find a Thai restaurant for lunch. When we pulled up to the building we thought it was a big sketch looking so we quickly read some reviews and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed…we ordered salad rolls, mango salad, peanut stir fry with chicken and one other entree. Can’t remember the name but it was a curry bowl. We were both so happy with our choices. The food was DELICIOUS, service was wonderful!! We had lots of time to kill before our flights home and the staff were so friendly and attentive. We would definitely go here again next time we’re in town!!
A few hours ago, my family arrived in Canada for our summer road trip. We needed a place to eat, so we headed here, and it was AMAZING! All of the food and drinks were great and the lady who was serving us (perhaps she was the owner?) was super patient and nice! Probably the kindest person I have ever met while traveling (and that is saying a lot considering my family and I travel a lot). Despite the fact the restaurant was closed, she still let us get two orders of mango sticky rice to go! My family and I will be going here again for the rest of our trip (๑・̑◡・̑๑)💕 (P.S. the photo I attached of the mango sticky rice was taken to go)
Food had good flavour overall, but the portions were a bit small. The Tom Yum pricing was odd, small bowl was $13 and large was $19, with nothing in between. The soup itself leaned on the sweeter side rather than the usual spicy/sour balance. Chicken satay skewers were decent, but not particularly memorable. Ambience definitely felt authentically Thai though, which was a nice touch.
This has to be one of the best Thai places in Calgary. The fish is 10 out of 10. Red curry with noodles green curry and prawns. A little heavy on the decoration. Lynn was our server. I guess they forgot a drink for us but overall great experience
Such a great little restaurant. A little off the beaten path but the food was amazing! The flavours are fantastic. Parang curry was awesome and the coconut rice was worth the trip alone. B/c its on the backside of a hotel, it can be a little tough to find. Could use another sign that sticks out from the building. Portion size was great for the price, pumped to have my delicious leftovers tomorrow. Very unique decor, loved it
Revisited after so many years. Food was just as good as I remember.
Just discovered this hidden gem. Very impressed with our experience dining there. We had tom yum, chilli sauce fish, peanut stir fry and fried rice. We had some drinks such as longan juice, thai iced tea. It is such a cozy place, we will definitely visit again!
About White Elephant Thai Cuisine Calgary
Thai restaurant on 19 Street NE, entered from the back of the Airport Travellers Inn, where all the food is certified halal. The entrance is tucked away on the far side of the building and marked with a sign, and inside the room is lively and colourful, with Thai decor.
What to order
Order the mango salad and the panang curry first. The papaya salad and the shrimp tom yum are also strong, and the eggplant with Thai basil is a favourite with diners. The chicken satay and the basil stir fry are solid, and the Thai longan iced tea is a good sweet finish. Portions are usually generous, often enough to share between two or three people.
Before you go
It is popular, so book ahead, since it fills up at peak times. The tom yum comes in a small and a large size with little in between, so pick the one that suits your table. Say how spicy you like it, so the soup comes out just right for you. Diners find the prices reasonable for the portions.
